When the first coffee beans were roasted in the area now known as Inglewood, California, it was for local consumption and not exported. The first coffee shop opened in 1892 and was located on Henry Street. By 1912, there were over a dozen cafes in the city. The early pioneers of the industry include Lorenzo Coffee & Tea Co., which opened its doors in 1911. At that time, San Bernardino County was still part of Mexico and so Mexican immigrants operated most of the businesses at that time. Lorenzo's slogan at the time was "Coffee from Mexico - Guatemalan Coffee from America." In 1916, Starbucks opened their doors to customers all across Southern California. At that time Starbucks was one of only a few companies selling steamed milk with each cup of coffee. In 1971, Starbucks moved its corporate headquarters to Seattle after becoming a publicly traded company. Today they are headquartered at 4395 Western Ave NW in Seattle, Washington with over 550 stores worldwide including 36 in North America!
