Inglewood is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 109,597 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the San Fernando Valley and is home to many famous entertainment and professional institutions such as Hollywood and Univision Communications headquarters. The first European settlers in what is now Inglewood were two brothers, Francis and Pierre Laclède, who arrived in 1781 from France. Their Landing Place was located along present-day Van Nuys Boulevard near Ventura Boulevard. In 1892 a group of Dutchmen founded a small townsite called "Hollywood" just east of Inglewood on then- lonely Harbor Heights Avenue. The town grew rapidly due to its location, good farming soil, water availability and general friendliness of the locals. In 1912 Hollywood became an incorporated municipality with its own City Council; it had a population of about 50 residents when it did so. On January 1, 1920 after years of debate by the City Council over whether or not to become annexation territory for Sylmar (then part of Culver City), Hollywood finally became an independent municipality after successfully applying for incorporation four times (but with no success). The amalgamation event that took place on November 3rd resulted in the creation of what we know today as Los Angeles County - one day after becoming an independent municipality!
