Today, there are over 133 million active duty Guardsmenserving in a variety of roles including militia, peacekeeping, and homeland security. Inglewood was founded on December 7, 1871 by John S. Inglewood as a town in the County of Los Angeles. The original town site was located on the east side of the San Gabriel River, about two miles south of present-day downtown Los Angeles. On November 16, 1892, Inglewood became a city through an act of incorporation. On April 17, 1893, it got its first municipal water system from the Southern Pacific Railroad and its first streetcars from the Western Electric Railway. The city's first mayor was Wm. Averill (1893-5). The discovery of oil in California in 1901 changed everything for Inglewood; within a few years, production had increased so much that it warranted annexing neighboring Compton and South Gate to keep up with demand. In 1906–7, American Telephone and Telegraph Company constructed telephone lines between Los Angeles and western Hollywood making possible mass advertising on both sides of the river for local businesses which would have been difficult to do without phone service
