The city has an area of 111 square miles (300 km²). The first Europeans to explore what is now Inglewood were Juan Crespí and his party on October 29, 1769. They named it "Cerrito" after one of their Captains who had been killed while exploring in that area. In 1871, a group of merchants led by James A. Garfield formed the Inland Empire Railroad and bought 100 acres (40 ha) near present-day El Monte for $5,000 from José Joaquín Murillo y el Castilla. The railroad built a depot here and began to service the town's burgeoning agricultural industry with trains carrying goods such as wheat, corn, apples, dairy products and other farmables to nearby cities like San Bernardino and Pasadena. In 1884–85 two members of the United States Congress – Hiram Johnson and John Sherman – visited Ingliswood during their reelection campaigns and were impressed by its progress as a rural community overshadowed only by its larger neighbor City of Angels on the east side of downtown Los Angeles. That same year Mayor Isadore Day recommended annexation into City of Angels due to its growing population center status; however this recommendation was not followed until 1907 when then-City Manager Harry Hahn recommended annexing into Ingliswood because he felt that it would be more beneficial for growth within Ingliswood itself than annexing into City Of Angels which he saw as becoming overly populated with businesses located in Downtown Los Angeles instead of north centralInglewood where they could flourish unimpeded." Annexation was approved on February 2nd 1907 at a meeting held at the old Biltmore Hotel across from Municipal Airport which included Mayor Day who declared: "There can be no question but that our citizens will move away from Anaheim if we do not annexed Inglewood." The annexation increased residential development around Municipal Airport including many Edwardian styled homes built between 1908-1910 called Park Royal Mansions (). Today those homes are valued anywhere from $2 million-$8 million according to real estate website Trulia . Development continued apace until 1939 when World War II interrupted much development due to war restrictions; however ingamevelopment recommenced once hostilities ended with substantial new housing projects being erected throughout downtown LA thanks in part to federal funding provided throughurban renewal programs ."
