Inglewood is a city in Los Angeles County, California. It is located on the east side of Los Angeles, just south of the City of Hollywood and north of West Hollywood. The population was 108,427 at the 2010 census. The original inhabitants were Native American people who called it "Hinckley". In 1847, two men by the name of Hinkley built a claim on what is now Inglewood and named it after their home town in England. They leased land from the Coachella Valley Missionary Society for $4 per year and built a small wooden fort to protect their land. Starvation during the Mexican–American War forced them to abandon their claim in 1849, but they returned soon afterwards to build a larger fortification which became known as Hinkley Park. The first post office in Inglewood was established in 1853. By 1870, there were 10 settlements within inglewood limits: Hinckley, Echo Hill, Garden Grove Heights (now part of Lynbrook), Hawthorne Heights (now part of Glendale), North Hills (now part of Paramount), South Hills (now part of Carson), and Weingarten Heights (now part of Canoga Park). In 1893, Edisonosa Avenue was renamed Elmhurst Avenue in honor of Samuel Morse Sr., an early investor in telephone lines through Inglewood. In 1907-1908, due to construction along Southern Boulevard near Bellflower High School – including much by architect Richard Neutra – Inglewood's downtown business district began to emerge as one of LA's most important neighborhoods with its own commercial districts separate from those around Hollywood and West Hollywood proper. In 1928-1929 WPA Artists' Colony No. 2 was located adjacent to Playland park across from Pasadena Station on Western Ave; artists lived communally until 1942 when it moved into Patton House at 623 S St Peters Dr; all residents were eventually expelled or disbanded following WW2 becauseen security concerns about communist sympathizers living among them
