The area now comprising Inglewood was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. The first post office called Inglewood was established in 1887. In 1909, a small subdivision called Indian Wells was built on land that now makes up part of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street. In 1923, a large housing development called Chavez Ravine was built east of downtown Los Angeles and soon became one of the most expensive neighborhoods to live in pre-recession America. By 1930, it had become one of the most segregated cities in America with African Americans making up less than 10% of its population. However, during World War II, Chavez Ravine became one of the largest Jewish areas in Southern California and many black American soldiers were stationed there during the war including Elvis Presley who lived on Vernon Avenue near Chavez Ravine from 1942- 1945

In 1892, the city annexed Rancho Cucamonga to become a part of its official territory. In 1893, San Bernardino became an independent municipality with its own government and mayor. The population of the town grew rapidly after annexation; by 1910 it had reached 25,000 people. The 1906 earthquake destroyed most of the downtown area and much of the infrastructure that would support later generations of residents, but Inglewood remained largely unscathed. The city continued to grow quickly through World War I and World War II as military bases were established in nearby Riverside and Victorville. By 1960, Inglewood had reached 100,000 people and was considered one of Southern California's most populous cities
