In 1860, 1st Battalion of the First Infantry Regiment had been transferred to 2nd Brigade under command of Colonel Emerson Waddell; this brigade served as garrison duty for missions such as patrolling Santa Ana River defenses or providing medical attention during local outbreaks of fever or cholera (the pandemic which would soon claim so many lives). On October 5th, 1861 General Ignacio Elizondo orderedALL OF THE ARMY TO DISEMBARK AT 0800 HOURS FOR SUSPENSE AND COVERAGE PURPOSES ON THE PART OF THE MEXICAN REPUBLIC WHEN THEIR MILITARY CRUISE WAS OBTAINED BY OUR NAVY IN PORT ADELAIDE UNDER COMMAND OF CAPTAIN JOHN FOSTER [Foster]. At 0830 HOURS ALL OUR MEN ARRIVED ONshore WITH THEIR BOILERS AND CAMP HOMES MADE GOOD USING THEIR WATERSPORTS WHILE THEY WAITED FOR THE EMERGENCY TO COLLIDE WITH OUR NAVY ACTIVE NEAR LAS VEGAS [...] toward evening on October 8th we saw an apparition consisting of WHAT APPEARS TO BE AN ENTIRE ARMY OF ANGELS COMING DOWN FROM HEAVEN OVER OUR HEAD [...] we were all greatly surprised and impressed by what seemed like supernatural powers bestowed upon us by some vengeful being who had feelings against us... After dinner that night our men marched into downtown Irvine where they halted outside City Hall before marching back up Broadway towards our campfire site just east of Discovery Place. There we gathered around our fireside while smoking Indian pipes made from split cedar logs until midnight when order was restored and we retired to our huts to sleep ... later that night I heard another noise coming from one end of town and going across Harper Street towards my encampment where I could see small groups Of Soldiers marching slowly but surely back into town... This noise turned out To be nothing more than hundreds Of Rats running amok! It wasn't long before Lieutenant Colonel John Denton CONCLUDED THAT THERE WAS NO ENEMY ELSEWITHIN YOUR LINES [...] He then issued Orders To Make All firearms And Ammunition Destroyed And no Troops Were To Be Sent Into Town For The Night.] On November 10th, 1846, Captain John Foster relieved Lieutenant Colonel John Denton commanding 1st Battalion First Infantry Regiment at Fort Campbell in Orange County after eight months service with the regiment due to ill health. One week later on November 14th Major-General George Armstrong Custer arrived in California via Oregon Territory pursuant to peace negotiations between United States forces and Mexico preceding war hostilities between Mexico and America proper starting December 20th1846[1][2]. With Custer's arrival came orders requiring each regiment within United States Army command "to be armed & equipped" according to Departmentof War Regulations dated November 17th1846[3]. Irvine, California is a city located in Orange County, California. The population of Irvine was 134,723 as of the 2010 census. Founded in 1909 by developers Charles and Raymond LaFontaine, Irvine became an industrial center for semiconductor manufacturing during the 1990s and 2000s. The city has since transitioned to a bedroom community for Southern Californians during this time. The first people to inhabit what is now Irvine were Native American traders who traveled the Pacific Coast region looking for treasures such as shells and gold. In 1828, Rancho Santa Ana was granted to Juan Rodriguez Placer by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna after successfully claiming part of Mexican territory north of San Diego Bay. Santa Ana built aadobe ranch on the northeast edge of what is now Irvine when he acquired it from Rodriguez Placer. By 1836, Santa Ana had developed land around present-day Newport Beach and grantee Rancho Rinconada was sold to Jose Garza in 1839. In 1850, Los Angeles City Council enacted Ordinance No. 8 which defined boundaries of Anaheim County palms that stretched eastward into today’s Orange County In 1853, following Mexican independence from Spain, two Spanish agents arrived in Orange county with orders to purchase all land east of San Clemente Island (present day Huntington Beach). One agent purchased three square miles near Anaheim; his partner bought six square miles around Present-day Garden Grove In reply to these purchases two Russian émigrés named Ivan Tchekhovsky and Fyodor Dostoevsky bought 100 acres between Anaheim Avenue (now Buena Park Boulevard) and Figueroa Street near Laguna Niguel for $4,000 each On September 15th 1860 – just one year after Mexico gained its own Independence from Spain – Captain James Cook sailed past Point Mugu on his return voyage from England with his cargo of Resolution clippers carrying supplies bound for Acapulco! Commodore John Cranch Richardson met Captain Cook at Point Mugu on December 10th 1860 while exploring northwest coast of North America! This event marked the beginning of regular trade between the United States and Mexico which would continue until 1912!!! After arriving back at Fort Point at Newport Harbor on January 17th 1861 Commodore Richardson ordered Lieutenant Edward Preble USNR vessel USS Constitution anchored nearby while he embarked five men under Acting Ensign David Dixon Porter USN aboard HMS Erebus en route from Tahiti To Santiago!! Onboard Constitution Commander Preble went ashore where he discovered fresh water springs next to Mission Concepcion Chapel! This activity led him eventually naming this point “Preble” after Commodore Richardson himself!!! Although there are references to “USS Constitution” off Newport Harbor prior to her commissioning date it is not clear if she actually participated in Commodore Richardson’s survey or not….. Following their arrival in Newport Harbor Commodore Richardson organized a party including Lt.(jg.) Samuel Johnson USN Commanding Officer USS Hatteras chartered ship Raceboat II akaSS Dolphin SSR[1] commanded by First Lieutenant Richard Wofford RNVR[2]to explore adjacent waters….. Unfortunately they failed due TOW storms…. [3] Another unsuccessful attempt was made 2 days later using HMS Pompomorgane but again no results were seen……… [4] With only Admiralty charts available it was decided that Raceboat should instead search inland along Agua Dulce River until they found better charts…….. As soon as practicable Soestertook command Boatman Richard Wofford head down river then race out aground island finding shoals & rapids but finally making progress about 7pm 26 July 1861 When about ½ mile downstream from shore He sighted Floating Burial Mound consisting Of A large Stone Slab Over Top Of Which appeared To Be A Human body displaying Mortuary implement & other artifacts
