In 1881, the Naval Shipyard at Inglewood was established as a sister shipyards to those of Newport News. With a workforce of over 4,000 sailors and marines, this facility was capable of constructing warships large and small. At Inglewood, naval vessels were built from wood until World War II when aluminum became available. Ships constructed at Inglewood include the USS Enterprise (CV-6), USS Scorpion (SS-205), USS John F Kennedy (CV-8), USS Yorktown (CV-14) and more.
