The population was 1,277 at the 2010 census. founded by Richard Irvine in 1892 as a small town on the east side of Anaheim Hills near Disneyland, it has grown to become one of Southern California's most populous cities. Irvine has been home to many prestigious universities and businesses including UC Riverside, USC, and Google. The first people to live in what is now Irvine were the Ohlone people who lived there for hundreds of years before migrating out into nearby San Bernardino County. In 1892, Richard Irvine founded the town of Irvine on land that he had purchased from Mission San Gabriel Arcangelus. At first it was just a small farming community with few permanent residents. However, due to its location close to Disneyland and other tourist attractions, Irvine quickly grew into a thriving city. In 1965, when Anaheim Hills was annexed by Los Angeles County and became part of the city of Los Angeles proper (it still remains an unincorporated area within Orange County), Irvine became part of Los Angeles City limits- making it one of the last remaining incorporated towns in all Los Angeles County. It experienced rapid growth during this time and soon reached its current size– totaling over 350,000 residents as of 2010. Despite being relatively new to major league baseball (the game began play in 1903), UC Riverside was one of only two schools – along with UCLA – thatIrvine offered full athletic scholarships starting in 1928 out of all 46 western Pacific Coast Universities eligible for NCAA Division I sport eligibility at that time.* The university also played host to both the annual Western Athletic Conference championships* (now known as College World Series)and the Southern Conference championships from 1933 until 1961.* A number OF pro players have originated from or attended UC Riverside- among them Reggie Jackson*, Roberto Clemente*, Don Sutton*, Curt Schilling*, Melky Cabrera* etc.* One significant event took place during this time which affected not just Irvines citizens but also much larger portions of southern California: The Great Depression caused many jobs to go away throughout downtown LAs area; however since so many people did business with companies located elsewhere outside Of Town they didnt really suffer too badly economically speaking*. This helped fuel continued growth for Downtown LA however things changed drastically when Mayor Tom Bradley started trying To gentrify Downtown LA back in the early 1970s without much success * Authorized spending went up 50% while crime rates went up 400%.
