The United States Army's Kerman, California Garrison was established in 1881. The first post in the area was an artillery battery at Fort Tejon. This detachment was disbanded in 1882 and its equipment and personnel were moved to Yerba Buena Island for use as a garrison there. In 1886, the fort was redesignated Camp Tejon and the detachment became Camp Tejon Infantry. Thereafter, it lost its military designation until 1912 when it again became Camp Tejon Infantry. From 1916-1918, the detachment served with World War I as part of the San Francisco Expeditionary Force commanded by General John J. Pershing In 1933, after years of service during World War II, Camp Tejon Infantry was reactivated as the 4th Battalion (Service) California National Guard under command of Colonel Harry Ransom It has continuously been active through various wars and peacekeeping deployments since then including deployments to Afghanistan in 2001 and Iraq in 2003. The battalion is currently composed of three companies: Company A (1st Battalion), Company B (2nd Battalion), and Company C (3rd Battalion). It also has a Detachment Commander which is a colonel or higher officer who leads all company detachments within their unit

In 1990 it amalgamated with neighboring communities of West Covina and Banning to form the new City of Riverside-San Bernardino which has since grown to encompass all seven municipalities within Riverside County as well as portions of Orange County and Nevada County
Kerman was founded by Horace Kerman in 1848. The town became a mining and agricultural center after gold was found in the area in 1849. The town experienced growth during the early 1900s as a result of its position as an important railroad junction. Kerman's downtown area is still an active commercial and cultural center today.
