Kerman, California is a small town located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 2,549 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kern County seat of Bakersfield. Kerman is located about 30 miles southeast of Los Angeles and 50 miles northwest of San Bernardino. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.9 square mile (0.3 km²), all land. The first Europeans to visit what is now Kerman were prospectors looking for new land to exploit in 1849-50 after they discovered gold deposits in nearby Owens Valley. In 1873, John Wesley Powell mapped and named this region “Kern County” after George Washington Kern, one of its earliest settlers and namesake for an early irrigation canal that connected nearby towns with farmland outside Kern City proper. The post office at Kerman opened on October 10, 1876; it was renamed Bakersfield on January 1st, 1913 following a merger of two other local post offices in that town: Bakersfield Post Office #1 (established February 3rd 1870) and Bakersfield Post Office #2 (established November 6th 1865). At 2,549 people as of 2010 census – just over half the population today – Kerman remains one of Kern County’s smallest towns by population size but it has experienced rapid growth since 2000 thanks to Interstate 5 Exit 179B’s accession as KERR Boulevard which leads directly into town from I-5 just south of downtown Bakersfield/Alameda county line Since Interstate 5 exit 179B became available in 2000 there has been significant growth within "Kern County" via development along I-5 including residential subdivisions off I-5 eastbound and westbound exits leading into town like "Hollywood Hills Drive" intersecting with I-5 near downtown off exit 180A northbound serving much needed job opportunities for residents who are commuters coming into or leaving downtown Bakersfield while allowing some commercial development adjacent to I-5 such as truck stop/motel next door providing additional employment opportunities accessed by motorists travelling through or heading out from downtown during rush hour periods
