The discovery of oil in Kern County during the early 1920s led to increased development around Kerman and other nearby communities; however, economic decline followed during the Great Depression and World War II due to lack of available resources. Today, Kerman continues to be an agricultural community with a significant aerospace industry presence along with some retail businesses and services that support local businesses such as accounting and engineering firms.
The first location of the Kerman Sentinel was in 1887. In 1898, the paper was purchased by J.B. Patterson and moved to its current location at 209 N First Street in 1909. The paper served as a daily until 1943 when it became a weekly. In 1951, the paper became an hourly newspaper and continues to serve that role today.
