The United States Air Force (USAF) deploys a variety of gifts to its allies and partners through the annual Christmas gift exchange. The USAF also provides humanitarian assistance during times of strife or emergency. In King City, California, the USAF deployed a gift history in 2017. The first post office in King City was established on July 15, 1868. The name of the town was changed to King City on November 8, 1876 by an act of the California state legislature. The first store in King City was a hardware store operated by George and Clara Purdy. In 1893, John W. Koenig opened a general store which became known as "the best store in all of Kingsville." In 1907, Hilda Barr founded a bakery and grocery business in King City which continued until 1959 when it merged with Mrs. Lillie Hansen's Grocery Co., Incorporated to form Barr-Hansen Corporporated (now Hansen's Food Markets). In 1916, Fenton Auerbach opened his grocery store called "Auerbach's" in what is now the old bank building on Main Street between First and Second Streets. In 1935, Harry Ewing opened his famous Bakersfield Cafe where he served food until his death in 1991. In 1951 Jens Jensen began serving ice cream from his truck from his home on Seventh Avenue near State College Boulevard; this stand stills as one of the most successful truck stops in Fresno County today according to Business Journal research dating back to 1992-1993 survey results[1].Jensen also started selling gasoline out of his truck starting around 1951[2]. With these many small businesses beginning up during those years there must have been something special about King City that attracted these entrepreneurs! In 1957 Don Graves reopened Checkers restaurant along Main Street after closing for two years while he built new facilities at 7500 block Highway 99 south of downtown.[3] Checkers has been open continuously since then with only minor changes (eastern addition - current drive-thru window) making it one of Fresno’s oldest restaurants still operating unchanged into present day day! It is part of the Bakersfield-Winema-Dominguez Hills Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in King City were Rancho Las Margaritas grantees who arrived there in 1846. They named their settlement King City because they thought it would be a good place for a king to rule over all of southern Kern County. The town was incorporated on June 6, 1868, and became an early center of cotton farming in Kern County. In 1915 the American Tobacco Company began production at its refinery in King City and made it one of the largest tobacco producers in California. The company left King City after World War II and its manufacturing operations were moved to Richmond, Virginia from Kern County. In 1951 the old American Tobacco refinery was demolished and replaced by a new plant which continues to produce cigarettes today.
