The first Europeans to visit what is now King City were fur traders from Russia who came through the area in 1824. A Mexican claim to the land preceded American occupancy by many years. On February 25, 1860, during the Gold Rush, prospectors discovered gold and named the district "King City" after John Sutter's moral hero and namesake of Sacramento, California. The town was founded by 52 men under the leadership of James Wickersham as a mining camp on Elk Hills Station near present-day downtown King City on May 15, 1861. Gold production ceased following World War II but has recently recommenced due to new discoveries nearby including an underground water source called Kings Canyon which supplies all three cities with drinking water; and exploration for oil shale near Kern Lake that could provide much needed additional revenue for both King City and its surrounding communities. In recent years there have been many redevelopment projects taking place in Downtown King City such as Artspace One which opened in late 2009 adjacent to downtown’s main library building; Next Door Brewery - home of world’s largest microbrewery - whichopened in early 2014 adjacent to Next Door artist alley; Valley View Trailer Park - one of several dozen trailer parks across America that have seen significant redevelopment since 2008 complete with brand new shopping malls/entertainment complexes/restaurants etc.; The Kings Arms sports bar & restaurant where IMAX movies are shown throughout each day starting at 2 p.m.; and most notably just last year when two residential towers were completed next door neighbors to Artspace One – Phase Two development will feature more than 350 housing units ranging from studios up to three bedrooms plus a living room & kitchenette with full bathtubs & dryers!
