King City is a small city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now King City were the Tongva Native Americans. In 1853, prospectors and miners discovered rich gold and silver deposits in what would become Kern County, but little development took place until the late 1800s when a railroad was built through Kern County and King City became an important stop on that line. Development continued during World War II as aircraft manufacturing moved to King City from nearby Hanford Valley. During the 1970s and 1980s, downtown King City experienced significant revitalization led by Mayor Tom Latham who spent millions of dollars renovating entire blocks of city center including two main streets (High Street and Mayfair) as well as developing new parks, libraries and other public services. Today downtown King City remains a vibrant community with many cultural attractions for residents and visitors alike. King City is located in the southeastern corner of Los Angeles County, and it was founded on July 8, 1847 by Captain John C. Fremont as the temporary capital of California. The city served as the seat of government for parts of Southern California before moving to downtown Los Angeles in 1852. The city was renamed Los Angeles on April 14, 1893, after Ulysses S. Grant became the 30th President of the United States and King City became part of his new presidential palace complex at Gadsden Hill. Los Angeles was first settled by Native Americans in what is now Downtown LA back when there were no cities and only trails leading to them. In 1795-1796 Spanish traders led by José Gabriel de Monterey explored and claimed land that includes present-day Downtown LA. In 1807 Mexican governor Felipe de Neve surveyed and named a town near today’s Downtown LA for Captain Juan Bautista Camacho y Zavala who had been sent from Mexico to explore California’s Potential for Gold Rush Mines. However, this would be America’s first European Settlement with an American Flag flying over it! This Town would eventually become known as Rancho La Brea (now Boyle Heights). Captain James Cook discovered North America while sailing through these waters on his HMS Discovery on October 12, 1775 while exploring northwest coast of Whatcom Island off the Olympic Peninsula in what is now WA . He named this area ‘Cox’s Land’ but later changed it to King City due to its location adjacent to Malibu Creek which he thought may contain valuable underwater gold veins worth exploration! Cook also made landfall here during his third journey around Northern America aboard HMH Prince Royal about March 22nd 1776 where he described finding “a large river or stream flowing into a bay or gulf…the inhabitants are very wild Indians having lives few days without using some kind of hunting weapon; they live chiefly upon game laid out under cover according to their custom: They know nothing either of planting or building….This country appears almost impossible for man let alone beast; yet they have got possession thereof by force if not fraud so that I cannot think any other way than through trade with them….. Upon further inquiry I found out that many rich men buried among these ruins were actually our real friends and co-proprietors whose estates we usurpede without their knowledge or consent….The discovery probably occasioned great regret among those who had original possession because they lost all their former advantages thereby; but such proceedings always tend ultimately to confirm good order and justice when once obtained
King City was founded by Ishmael and his wife, Eva, in 1848. The city was named for King George IV of England who had been born in the city the previous year. The original town boundaries were set at what is now First Street and Market Street. The first post office in King City opened in 1852. In 1862, King City became a county seat with a population of 10 residents. On November 14, 1870, King City incorporated as a city under the name of "City of Angels". The first mayor was John Haggerty. In 1914, the population of King City reached 100,000 people and it became an independent city again on January 1, 1915. From 1916 to 1920, Mayor Harry Ackerman served as Mayor pro tempore of both cities concurrently. On July 16, 1942, during World War II (the Japanese bombing campaign against Los Angeles), the United States military bombed the downtown area killing more than 30 civilians and wounding over 150 others including many children. After unsuccessfully trying to rebuild after the attack three years later (1946), Mayor Harry Ackerman initiated redevelopment plans for downtown which led to growth in business and jobs throughout the decades that followed until Queen's Park – Downtown LAP was completed on December 17th 2009 providing new homes for all Kings County citizens regardless of income or zip code
