In 1898, a bandstand was built on Main Street near downtown, providing music for local dances and receptions. In 1933, the post office moved from its original location to what is now First National Bank Building on Broadway. That same year, King City set up its own Marine Corps Reserve unit called "The Brave Marines" which enjoyed an annual concert at the civic center until 1941 when they were merged with the Coast Guard Reserve unit known as "The Golden Fleece." During World War II, the town came together to support military operations by donating goods such as food and gasoline. In 1951, Mayor Harry Sizer established a citizens' committee to promote social welfare activities throughout town through donations collected from businesses and individuals alike. This committee would later become known as "The Committee on Social Welfare." In 1967, Main Street between Broadway and Gage Avenue was renamed after Mrs. Ada Jablonski who had helped organize King City's first major parade ever. On October 8th of that year (King City's founding day), Msgr Edward Jablonski delivered an address entitled "Gift Giving Among Friends" at Stonington Hall where he outlined how giving could be used to benefit everyone in our community- both large or small groups alike! From then until present day there has never been another event held in honor of King City's birthday - let alone commemoration! He brought back plants and animals to England, and he is credited with bringing the first European settlers to this area. In 1851, General Sherman sent a ship called the "Herald" to explore the California Coastline. The ship's crew included representatives from Great Britain and America, and they took souvenirs from various locations along the coast. They also collected shells from nearshore beaches. In 1899, Henry Wrigley started importing oysters from Japan for sale in San Francisco Bay. This became an important source of revenue for Wrigley's company. In 1901, Wrigley opened its first store in San Francisco and began selling oysters direct to consumers. In 1916, Avedon Donoho developed a new type of camera that revolutionized photography! His camera company became one of the most successful in history!
King City is an unincorporated community in Kern County, California, United States. It is located on the Pacific Coast Highway southwest of Bakersfield. The post office at King City was established in 1896, and discontinued operation in 1966. The ZIP code for King City is 93634. The name "King City" probably derives from the fact that it is one of a few places along the coast where navigable rivers flow into the Pacific Ocean. The first European to visit what is now Kern County was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 4, 1542 when he landed at San Diego Bay and named it La Nación after his ship, San Miguel de la Nación. A Spanish Mission was built at Kingsville in 1821 by Father José Gabriel Abrego as part of Rancho Santa Margarita Mexican land grant given to him by Mexican President Agustín de Anza. In 1847, John Culp Drury founded Kingsville as a small town on land granted him by Mexico with the idea of making Kingsville a commercial center for almonds and other produce grown around Bakersfield along the Oregon Trail. In 1859, John Culp Drury donated 160 acres (65 hectares) to build a new town site on what would become today's King City square; this area became known as 'Old Town'. soon after its Establishment King City quickly attained notoriety for its annual 'Almonds Festival' which attracted many visitors from all over Southern California who enjoyed fresh picked almonds hands-on from local farmers during Market Days throughout autumn/winter months across America's longest open market period - September thru May each year! In 1861 Pappy Reeder organized and ran the first successful election for Mayor with 28 ballots cast out of an electorate of 100 citizens! The following year saw construction commence on what would later become California State Capitol – home of then Governor Hiram Johnson (D), later Ulysses S Grant (R). By 1865–1866 most all old buildings including Old Town had been replaced or rehabbed by newly erected structures including House #1 still standing today - one of only 6 extant example remaining pre-World War II! Today's downtown offers several interesting businesses such as: Chamberlin & Associates law firm; KFC restaurant; Guitar Center; Parade Square Gallery & Gift Shop; Mike's Pizza Place - closed since 1984 but reopened in early 2016 under new ownership - used to be known as "Pizza Palace"; ABC News Building at corner of 3rd Street & Broadway served as studio during 1976-1978 Olympics when live broadcasts were made available statewide direct to TV viewers statewide...and much more!
The Marine Gift History Project is a research project that was started in 1987 by Dr. James Fenton, an assistant curator at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. The project has since been expanded to include gift history from all types of maritime organizations and individuals around the world. The Marine Gift History Project consists of more than 10,000 records from over 1,500 vessels and coastguards. Included are items such as paintings, drawings, medals, books, toys and other memorabilia related to maritime gifts. Many of these items were donated or received as awards from organizations like the United States Maritime Administration (USMA) or the International Maritime Bureau (IMB). To date, the Marine Gift History Project has uncovered more than 25 unique marine gifts that have been awarded or given as prizes by various governments and organizations around the world. These objects span a wide range of topics and themes including naval warfare, exploration and trade; landscape art; architecture; natural resources; democracy and freedom; sports equipment; fashion products; wine accessories and much more.
The Marine Gift History Project was initiated in the fall of 2009 by the staff of The Mariners’ Museum. Our goal is to document the history of marine gifts and artifacts from around the world. Our collection includes items from ancient Greece, Rome, England, Spain, Japan, and more. We are working hard to collect as much information as we can about each gift and artifact we find. We hope that our project will help improve understanding of maritime culture and provide a source for future maritime gifts research.
King City is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 9,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Lonoke Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1848 by John Sutter and named for his Mexican land grant of Rancho Cahuilla (now King City). The first post office in King City opened on December 21, 1849. A store and stagecoach stop were built in 1853 near present-day downtown King City by Wm. P. Shaffer and Ector Giannini; both businesses closed around 1870. In 1865, gold was found at Kings Canyon and many prospectors went to find it; one man named John Sutter led the way to Kings Canyon with his wagon train of twelve men. In 1868, Sutter married Isabella Hetty Walker and began to build what became known as the "Sutter's Fort" on his rancho at present-day downtown King City; it served as a depot for supplies going down the San Joaquin River from Bakersfield to Stockton and north towards Sacramento. In 1901, Kaiser Wilhelm II granted city status to King City through Executive Order No. 6956; it then reverted back to its original name of Rancho Cahuilla after annexation by Bakersfield in 1907 (the only time that any city within Kern County gained city status). A fire destroyed most of the old downtown core early in 1906 but new construction began immediately including several stores and two hotels which remain standing today: The Hotel California and The Californian Inn (). Many people who had been living near or under building since before 1906 lost their homes during the firestorm that followed when sections of town were completely leveled by flames that burned for three days non-stop. At some point between 1911-1912 an addition was made to Building 1 (now Business Hall) which housed a meeting room used for school board meetings starting on October 15th 1912 until May 15th 1915 when they moved into Room 201 Renaissance Hall located on North Main Street east of First Avenue building now known as South Main Street Historical Museum also started using this space from 1915 until 1923 when it moved out into their current location next door on East Second Avenue. Queen's Park opened up across First Avenue from South Main Street Historical Museum around 1922Peoples History Of Kern County On July 25th 1948 Spreckels Department Store caught fire leaving only one story remaining with all 3 stories destroyed burning throughout entire business day along with 10000 tires stored inside spreckels department store which also caught fire< ref="" /> On September 10th 1951 another large warehouse complex called "The Star" caught fire duelloring problems with roofing sparks flying out onto loading docks causing extensive damage totaling $27000 dollars worth of merchandise lost plus personnel losses including 5 firefighters killedBadly sustained fires continue sporadically through out late 1951 & 1952 causing loss estimated at $115000< ref="" /> Finally just prior to closure on November 17th 1952 large open storage area Fashion Annex Complex located across 2nd Ave & 3rd St calling itself "The Lighthouse" uncontrolled fires continued raging throughout night destroying much property valued at over $2000000.< ref="" /> By 1955 all these complexes had been rebuilt so essentially much property has changed hands multiple times.
