Small batch coffee is a term used to describe coffee beans that are roasted and brewed by small-scale roasters. Small batch coffee, often refers to unroasted or unfiltered coffee, is typically lower quality than regular roast coffee. ThisLower-quality coffee can be attributed to smaller roasts, less processing time and less drying time. In King City, California, small batch coffee has been a popular drink for over 100 years. There are many different origins for small batch coffee in theKing City area and it can be found in cafes, restaurants and even grocery stores. The first cafe in King City was founded in 1892 by Samuel Morse and his wife Mary Ann Morse. They started the shop to sell milk and baked goods from their house on Main Street. The menu at the Morse’s Cafe included items such as pastries, pies and sandwiches made with local bakery products such as rolls, cake mixes and muffins. In 1951, when Sam Morse passed away, his wife continued running the business until her death in 1998. At that point the business passed down to her children who continue to operate it today under the name of Mrs. John Doe’s Coffee Shop located on Third Street between Main Street and Gold Rush Boulevard (formerly Second Avenue). One of the most famoussmallbatchcoffeepleaseintheKingCityareawasthe Argyle Coffee Company which opened its doors in 1926. Argyle Coffee was named after Harry Argyle who owned a store on First Avenue near what is now Gold Rush Boulevard(now Third Street). HarryArgyle'sstoresoldcoffeeplattersandmugshotstohelpcustomersselectacoffeeoftheirchoice.(SeeFigure 1) Argyle alsoservedvimitigationalteacalledPineappleTwist which was prepared with whole Java beans (not ground), sugar syrup (not sweetened condensed milk), cinnamon sticks (2 teaspoons)and Pineapple Schnapps (1 ounce/30 mL). King City, California was founded in 1847 by Captain John C. Frémont and his small army of mounted men as a trading post on the Fraser River. King City is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 25,013 at the 2010 census. It is the second-most populous city in San Bernardino County after Victorville and it straddles the border of Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. The first settlement in King City was founded by Captain John Copley on October 26, 1847 as part of Rancho Los Nietos de la Aguirre. Copley's group included twelve men and one woman. The town grew rapidly during the 1850s due to its location at an important crossroads for wagon traffic between San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. On December 12, 1854, King City became an incorporated municipality under the name of "Los Angeles". King City experienced significant growth following World War II due to its strategic location as a transportation hub on Interstate 10 between Los Angeles and Orange County. The post-war boom slowed starting in the early 1960s due to withdrawing money from banks in response to rising oil prices. However, King City has seen recent resurgence with new development including a $365 million housing project initiated by Mayor Neil DeAngelo that began construction in 2014 and will include 1,000 homes;[1] a new baseball stadium being built by Pima Community College;[2] and plans for a new downtown library/mall complex.[3] According to the 2010 US Census report,[4] King City had 25,013 residents living in 576 housing units which included 39% renters (not owners) and 61% owner-occupied housing units (occupant households).
