The Kingsburg Air Force Base, located in the town of Kingsburg, California, was once an important military installation. It was home to the United States Air Force's Second World War bomber force and its postwar fighter unit. The base played a leading role in USAF operations during the Cold War. Today, it is home to the air force's 9th Wing, which is responsible for providing air support to ground forces in the California Central Valley. Kingsburg AFB was founded on 20 October 1942 by Maj. Gen. Curtis E. LeMay as a provisional site for two flying training squadrons of Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses known as "Gift" units or "Flying Tigers". Each squadron consisted of six bombers and two fighters; both Gift units were equipped with propellers and could fly at high altitudes for extended periods of time without refueling or landing. In December 1943, three more Boeing B-17s were assigned to gift units at RAF Cosford in England under command of Chief Marshal Sir Alan Brooke; these aircraft became known as "Brooke Bombers". The first flights of these aircraft took place on 8 January 1944 from RAF Fairford over North Africa; they arrived at Kingsburg AFB on 15 January 1944 and operated out of thisbase until Japan's surrender in 1945. After the war ended, gifts continued to be sent from America to Europe via RAF Fairford where they underwent engine testing before takeoff into Allied airspace over Scotland on 3 July 1946 - becoming operational as part of Ninth Air Force. Baby boomers who grew up during that period will remember this moment when Bomber Command finally had their own airport - just across the English Channel from their childhood homes!
