The name of the town comes from one of Kingbury's two sons, George Washington Kingsbury (1846-1924), who served as mayor of Fresno from 1912 to 1916 and as a U.S. Senator from 1924 to 1928; and his brother Cyrus Akeley Kingsbury (1853-1937). Kingsburg has been called "the most beautiful small town in America." According to Forbes magazine in 2002, it had the best quality of life in America based on rankings compiled by internal critics at that time including "costs associated with crime rates high enough for residents to feel comfortable staying put", "an easy commute into Fresno or other major cities" and "friendly people who help out when needed". In 2009 Empire Bluegrass Fest was staged here and attracted some 30,000 people over four days which made it the largest bluegrass festival in Southern California
