Kingsburg is a small town located in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Kingsburg was founded in 1876 by Captain John Kingsbury and his family as a small ranchery and stagecoach stop on the old Santa Fe Trail. The town grew rapidly due to its location close to water resources and its easy access to railroad transportation. By 1920, Kingsburg had become an agricultural center with tomato, apple, and other fruits growing abundantly. In the early days of municipal government, Kingsburg was known for its independent streak; it refused to join any municipality until it became clear that such an action would improve its quality of life. In 1952, when Kingsburg incorporated as a city, it chose not to adopt a downtown shopping district like many other new towns in the area because this would have required costly renovation work that would have interfered with its primary purpose - farming.
