The Kingsburg Naval Shipyard was founded in 1922, and the Navy has been its main customer ever since. This shipyard produces submarines, destroyer escorts, amphibious ships, and a variety of other warships. In 1941, the Navy contracted with the King’s Scowcroft Shipbuilding Corporation to build two battleships. The contract was not awarded until 1942 because of World War II; however, by then it had become clear that both plants were too small for the production of large warships. The plant reopened in 1944 as the Huntington Ingalls Industries Shipbuilding Company. In 1969-1970, one of the shipyards became part of General Dynamics Ordnance Division (GDOD). GDOD was merged into Raytheon in 1986. In 1992-1993, another shipyard became part of General Dynamics Electric Boat Division (GDED). These two yards have produced a variety of boats including destroyers, submarines, and aircraft carriers for both the United States Navy and its allies around the world.

Kingsburg, California is a small city in Kern County, California. The population was 10,711 at the 2010 census. Kingsburg is located on the east side of the Kern River and is bordered by Non-Alaska Native Reservation to the south and east, and Diamond City to the north. The first European tosight this area was Spanish traders in 1769 when they traveled downriver from San Francisco. The name "Kingsburg" (a corruption of Mission San Gabriel) was given to it by early Mexican settlers because of its strategic location as part of their Plans Phrases for West Central America campaign. It lay on an alkali flat which could be used as a staging ground for attacking tribes along the length of Rancho San Bernardino near Bakersfield. In 1846, gold was discovered in this area and soon there were post offices here named King's Valley (1847), Gold Rush (1849), Silver Spring (1851), Marysville(1854). A town site was platted here in 1859 but it never grew large enough to become a separate municipality. In 1872, Kingsburg became a part of present-day Kern County when it was split off from Santa Clara County. It remained an agricultural center until after World War II when industry began arriving with automobiles becoming popular here in 1927. For many years Kingsburg functioned as a bedroom community for Bakersfield while Bakersfield developed into one of Southern California's largest metropolitan areas. Today, Kingsburg remains an agricultural center with some light industrial activity; however its ZIP code 77501 has seen increasing commercial development over recent decades including several restaurants and two large banks that have moved into new buildings since 2000 on both sides of Interstate 5 between downtown Bakersfield and North Hollywood/Burbank - making it one if not THE most rapidly growing cities within Kern County!
