Kingsburg is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,493 at the 2010 census. It is located east of Bakersfield on the route of the old Butterfield Road. Kingsburg was founded in 1868 by two brothers, George and Jesse Kingsbury. In 1876, it became the home of Judge John Leland who helped to create Kern County. Kingsburg's history begins with two brothers who founded the community in 1868 on land that they had acquired from Rancho Rinconada Mexican landowner Manuel Nieto de la Hoz. The town began as a small ranching station on Butterfield Road which ran through present-day Kingsburg and Pahrump. In 1876, when Judge John Leland moved to Kingsburg from Bakersfield to serve as its first mayor and justice of peace, he recommended the town become an agricultural center with markets for local produce and goods exported to San Francisco Bay Area cities such as Oakland and San Jose. The town continued to grow rapidly thanks to its namesake's agriculture industry; by 1886, Kingsburg had a school system and over 100 businesses including stores, churches, hotels and banks were established within its boundaries. Over time additional residential areas were developed west of downtown while still keeping close connection to downtown via arterial roads such as State Route 362 which served both neighborhoods well until state highway construction began in the early 1960s which severed most commercial connections between them
