La Canada Flintridge is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2000 census. La Canada Flintridge is located east of Fresno on State Route 99. It is part of the Fresno–Chico Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1905 as a result of the opening of the Central Pacific Railroad's La Canada branch line to nearby Chico. A post office and store were established in 1907, and the name change to La Canada Flintridge in 1912. The first school in La Canada Flintridge was opened in 1915 by Mrs. Anna Richardson with six students from her home and three teachers from Chico School District No. 2; it became known as "Mrs. Richardsons' School" until 1959 when it became "Humphrey Junior-Senior High School". In 1919, La Canadia Oil Refinery began production and increased traffic on State Route 99; accordingly, local businesses began to prosper due to an increase in business opportunities and more residents moving into the area for work during World War II (the war led to an influx of new residents). In 1951, La Canadia merged with Imperial Oil Company to form Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI), which invested heavily in research and development for new oil products including jet fuel and plastics; consequently, many businesses closed or changed their names because their products were now produced by ICH rather than local companies such as Koppers or Shell%. By 1970, ICH had discontinued all its operations except for woodworking supplies within the community; however, demand for these products still continued due to ICI's dominant position within industry at that time. In 1984–1985 a $10 million project called "The Great American Schools Project", which aimed to renovate all 50 schools within ICH's Southern California facilities into modernized classrooms/schools using construction management software program called STARS (Student Training Advocate Research Support), was conducted throughout the entire companywide district; this resulted in increased enrollment at both high Schools along with significant cost savings for parents through reduced teacher absenteeism rates and improved student performance rates across all our schools regardless of academic level or socioeconomic status! The renovated schools reopened Summer 1985 under new name: Humphrey Middle & Senior High Schools-LaCanada Flintridge! Today’s Humphrey Middle & Senior High Schools are one of two comprehensive high schools located within ICH’s El Sobrante campus – adjacent to approximately 350 families who have enjoyed access since 1983 through our “ParentsChoice” program [www://parentschoicehighschoolslaacaforrestorengrowth4u].
