This gave rise to the idea of making Laguna Niguel part of Los Angeles County. In 1928, La Canada Flintridge was annexed by Los Angeles County and became part of the city of LA. Today, Laguna Niguel is one of Southern California's most popular tourist destinations with over 150 miles (240 kilometers) of beaches and attractions available for visitors.
In 1836, Captain James K. Polk of the United States Navy surveyed La Canada Flintridge and recommended that it be renamed after him. The town was platted in 1837 and named for Captain Polk. The community grew rapidly during the 1840s due to the discovery of oil wells in nearby El Dorado Hills and post office activity increased from two to six times its original size by 1850. By 1861, La Canada Flintridge had a population of 2,000 people and was incorporated as a city. During the American Civil War, La Canada Flintridge sided with the Union side and lost its status as a city but continued to exist as an incorporated village until it merged with another small town, Mission Viejo, in 1912.
