The National Guard has a long and varied history. It is one of the oldest and most important organizations in the United States. The Guard was first organized on July 1, 1775, as a military force to support the Continental Congress during the American Revolution. The Guard currently consists of 11 state militias and 2 federal reserves. It played an important role in both World Wars I and II. In 1917, President Woodrow Wilson requested that all states contribute 10,000 men to serve in the National Guard as part of his push for national mobilization during World War I. By 1920, it had grown to over 100 million soldiers (70% volunteer) mobilized for war overseas. In 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt called for all able-bodied men 18 years or older to be drafted into the military for wartime service in response to Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. To date, more than 50 million Americans have served in the National Guard or Reserves throughout our history. In 1945, after V-E Day celebrations, Congress passed legislation authorizing the continued recruitment of members of the National Guard for service in reconstruction following World War II. Chisum also served as mayor of La Canada Flintridge from 1890 to 1893. He was a strong advocate for education and development in his community. The mill closed in 1912, but its impact on the local economy has been significant.
In 1837, La Canada Flintridge was founded by a group of Scots immigrants. They named their new settlement after the community in Scotland that they were leaving behind. The town grew quickly and by 1850 it had a population of over 100 people. The settlers built a wooden courthouse and jail, as well as a school and grocery store. In 1862, the U.S. acquired California from Mexico and the town became part of the new state. La Canada Flintridge continued to grow until it reached its peak in 1920 with a population of over 500 people.
