The La Habra Army National Guard has been in existence since 1887. The unit was organized as a volunteer militia to protect the citizens of La Habra, California against Native Americans and bandits. In 1916, the La Habra Armory was built and became home to the nation's first standing army. The military detachment served in World War I and World War II as part of the American Expeditionary Forces. After the war, the armory became inactive until it was leased by the Air Force in 1961 and used as an airfield shopping center. In 1984, after years of negotiation, Congress passed legislation authorizing an active-duty military detachment to be assigned to La Habra. The contingent arrived on July 1st, 1984 and is now known as "The La Habra Army National Guard."

The La Habra Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to World War I. The unit was mobilized in 1916 and fought in the war on the front line, earning accolades for its bravery and heroism. After the war, the La Habra Army National Guard was decommissioned but not disbanded. It was instead redesignated as the California Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (CROTC). In 1949, CROTC became an full-fledged military branch of the California Military Department. In 1959, the La Habra Army National Guard was re-activated as part of a multicounty effort called “Operation Neptune Spear” which aimed to mobilize all US military forces loyal to South Korea. The battalion served in Japan from September 1959 until October 1960. Upon their return home, members of the battalion were awarded various honors including a Presidential Unit Citation (PUC) and two Distinguished Service Medals (DSM). Since its activation in 1959, La Habra Army NationalGuard has seen many changes. In 1965, it became an independently organized brigade under command of then-Lieutenant Colonel John Krollenberg III. From 1966 through 1971, it participated in several training exercises with United States Marine Commandant General James Nance Jr.'s 3rd Marine Division before deploying to Okinawa for Operation Downfall on April 15th 1970. Following their deployment they received numerous commendations from both American and Japanese units alike including two UPCs and three DSMs! In 1978, Captain Donnie Epps joined the unit as commanding officer after being promoted from captain status within Headquarters Battalion! He would later become brigadier general and commander of 3rd Brigade Combat Team 1/1st Infantry Division based out of Camp Pendleton Naval Base!
La Habra is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 245 at the 2010 census. La Habra is the second most populous city in the county and the third most populous city in Southern California after Los Angeles and Riverside. The first Europeans to visit what is now La Habra were members of Mission San Diego de Alcalá on November 10, 1776, when Spanish Captain José Ortega y Gasset named it San Miguel de la Huerta for Fray Junípero Serrano. The mission was abandoned in 1824 because of cost overruns, but new missions were established here including Mission Santa Ana (1785) and Mission San Fernando Rey (1821). In 1853, La Habra became part of Mexico when California became a part of the United States. As a result, it lost its Mexican-owned status and had no voice within American society. In 1907–1908, the City Council passed an ordinance that placed all businesses into one common market with Imperial Valley Business Association. This allowed Mexican-owned businesses to keep their prices low while opening up competition for American businessmen who wanted to open stores here. An important event that helped spur development in La Habra occurred on May 7th 1906 when Jock Mahony opened The Empire Wagon Shop at 5235 North Coast Highway (now Lincoln Boulevard). This store acted as a catalyst for many small business owners throughout Orange County to open their doors and begin manufacturing items such as saddles and fabric goods used by horse sellers across Southern California

The first European settler in what is now La Habra was Manuel Nieto in 1824. The town was named for James Hahn, governor of Alta California from 1827-1829 and one of Mexico's most active entrepreneurs during that time period. After Mexican independence was granted to America, La Habra became part of independent California under Governor José Joaquín de Arguelles y Cámpora on November 8, 1848. On February 14, 1860, Samuel Silliman built his store and home here. Silliman had been brought up in Monterey Bay Area when his father took up land grazing near Point Reyes Station before moving to Kern county in 1850 as a result of gold discoveries at Lassen Peak near Bakersfield. He operated a feed business here until he sold it to Arapaho Chief David Stevenson on May 1, 1865 for $5200 cash plus cattle and horses - setting an early example for land transactions between Native Americans and white settlers in this area. In 1870 Major General John Jumper led an American garrison into battle against Mexican cavalry at Los Angeles River Bridge over which Majors Kearny then forced his way after driving off more than 400 Mexicans with only eight men including Captains George Armstrong Custer (3rd Infantry Regiment) and Orson Welles (Citizen’s Army), leading what has come to be called "the Opening Day" of Californian Independence; this event also marked the beginning of American occupation of central California following Mexican defeat at Morelos Heights two years earlier The post office opened at La Habra on January 12th 1870 under Captain John Waddell with mail service starting on March 1st 1870 . On October 15th 1880 Northern Pacific railroad reached this point they started service providing passenger trains running daily between Sacramento & La Habra
