La Habra is a city in San Diego County, California. The population was 187,468 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in San Diego County after San Francisco and is considered an important center for the aerospace industry. The area that now makes up La Habra was first settled by people of the Mission Viejo culture around 7800 BC. The mission was destroyed by an earthquake in 1857, but some of its ruins still stand today. After Mexican independence from Spain in 1821, Mexico began to colonize California and over time various Native American groups moved into what became La Habra. In 1881, a group of entrepreneurs led by George Hearst founded the Central Pacific Railroad on land east of town which would become Hearst's Rancho Santa Fe de la Paloma. A year later, construction started on what would become Hearst High School (now Chaminade College Prep). In 1916, when war broke out between America and Europe, La Habra participated as part of Imperial Valley in support of America; it remained a military garrison during World War I and World War II until it was abandoned due to lack of resources in 1945. In 1957, following passage of Proposition 54 which increased spending on schools within local jurisdictions through Measure M (the "Measure M" school referendum), La Habra residents voted to annex their portion of neighboring Desert Hot Springs to form another city with a population over 100k: La Mesa had already annexed its share of Desert Hot Springs less than two years earlier when Proposition 54 took effect. After more than fifty years living under one name or another - including twenty years as part of Imperial Valley - the City Council voted unanimously on May 9th to change its name back to La Habra! And so it has been ever since...a proud community committed to being good neighbors while always aspiring for greater things...
