The museum was first established in 1887 as the Second California Rifle and Pistol Club, and later became the La Habra Rifle and Pistol Club Inc. In 1934, it merged with the American Legion to become the La Habra American Legion Gun Museum. The museum is now wholly owned by the City of La Habra.

The area now known as La Habra was first settled by the Tongva Native Americans in the early 1800s. In 1887, James Waugh and his brother-in-law William Hammond founded what is now City Hall Square on land that they had acquired from Rancho San Felipe de la Huerta owner José María Pico. They named it after their hometown of La Hoya (Hubernia), Spain. The square currently features a statue to Waugh and Hammond and was dedicated on October 14th, 1989 by Mayor Rudy Giuliani. In 1916, under the leadership of mayor John Sweeny, La Habra became one of the initial cities in Orange County when that county was created from parts of Los Angeles and Riverside counties. At its peak in 1940 there were over 50 businesses in La Habra employing over 4500 people; however, during World War II much commerce shifted to Kern County due to wartime production shortages at home

La Habra is a city in southern California, United States. The population was 97,824 at the 2010 census. La Habra is the second-most populous city in Orange County after Costa Mesa. It is the seat of District 3 of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and Casey Valley School District. In 1928, La Habra became one of several cities that were consolidated into the new City of Los Angeles. The first Europeans to visit what is now La Habra were Spanish traders who landed there on December 14, 1769 during Captain Juan Bautista de Anza's expedition led by Manuel Nieto from Mexico City. A day later they discovered an area with high water marks and explored it further before returning to their ships on December 16th. The next year another group led by Gaspar de Portolà explored the area and found a river flowing through it which they named Santa Clara River after Saint Catherine of Siena who had earlier been visiting Mexico City when this happened. On October 7, 1825 Mexican Governor José María Obregon granted Rancho San Pedro to Francisco Palou because he wanted to secure land for Mission San Fernando del Rey (later known as Mission Dolores) in present-day Sylmar which would be close to his current residence at Rancho Santa Ana de la Salinas east of downtown Los Angeles The grant included parts of present day Hacienda Heights, Baldwin Hills and Thousand Oaks In 1828 Manuel Nieto founded a small town called San Pedro de la Laguna within today's La Habra limits while still living at his rancho near Pasadena In 1829 he sold all his holdings including San Pedro de la Laguna to José Maria De Balboa y Gasset who built a small mission thereon but abandoned it due to lack of converts He then sold it back to Obregon in 1830 On November 6, 1830 Palou married Mónica Pacheco y Rivera from Potrero Hill and moved his family into their new home where they continued farming until 1840 when they purchased Rancho La Laguna from José Moreno . They also began construction on what would become their contemporary Main Street . The first house built there was #7 which still stands today . They raised chickens, pigs and horses until about 1850 when some immigrants arrived from Spain bringing with them large herds of sheep which changed hands many times until finally being bought by George Hearn in 1857 for $2 million dollars In 1851 local directories listed just six families living in tiny San Pedro before becoming majority Hispanicized around 1860 with more than 1,000 residents Thereafter average household size increased rapidly reaching three by 1870 With growth came social issues such as schools (1860), transportation (1872), water systems (1876), libraries (1880) churches (1887) Prohibition era gangs such as "Los Arroyos" appeared starting in 1893 followed by annexation efforts during World War II although no land changes took place due largely to opposition from white landowners
