The city was incorporated on February 14, 1907 as Anaheim but changed its name to La Habra on December 12, 1957 after becoming an official city within Orange County. La Habra is a city in Imperial County, California, United States. The population was 54,521 at the 2010 census. La Habra is located along the Atascadero River and about 25 miles (40 km) south of downtown Los Angeles. The area that would become La Habra was first settled by Native Americans in the 18th century. The first white person to arrive in what would become La Habra was José Antonio Pico, who came to land near present-day Anza Boulevard and Euclid Avenue on October 14, 1776 as part of an expedition led by Gaspar de Portolà. Pico named it Hacienda San José after his rancho holdings in Mission Viejo – now part of Irvine – which he founded on February 8, 1777. In 1802, Rancho Palos Verdes was acquired from Juan Bautista Alvarado by Brigadier General Manuel Nieto and Captain Vicente Guerrera for $30 per acre ($640 per kilometer). On July 4, 1857, when cattleman John Sutter discovered gold near present-day La Habra Canyon (), he decided to establish a small town around it called "Sutter's Mill". The name may have been inspired by Sutter's discovery of copper mines at Cajon Pass in San Bernardino County (). On March 3rd 1860 David Waddell organized a wagon train from Stockton via Bakersfield into what would become Tehachapi Canyon due to an error made by Waddell's interpreter Royce Peña concerning word order: "Bakersfield" should be followed immediately by "Tehachapi" because these two valleys were considered one unit according to Spanish naming conventions then in use. When they reached their destination they realized that there was no canyon but found instead Bakersfield Creek which they followed all the way down until reaching their original encampment on May 9th at mile post 12 Refugio de las Pulgas (now milepost 88), just north of today's Antelope Valley community of Joshua Tree National Park . Waddell renamed his new settlement after himself - Waddellsville (). After years of growth and development little attention was given to the city until 1923 when it incorporated as a city under the name "Los Angeles". In 1951 La Habra became an independent county separate from Los Angeles County. It annexed much of neighboring Riverside County in 1962 following a referendum vote conducted within its own government. The largest annexation ever done within City limits occurred on November 5th 1984 when portions of unincorporated Riverside County - including parts of Downey Heights and Pomona - were added to La Habara as well bringing its population up to 7300 residents making it one of Southern California’s most populous cities
On October 26, 1848, the Mexican government announced that it was withdrawing from California. The United States, which had been a party to the Mexican-American War and had taken in millions of Mexicans as refugees, saw this as an opportunity to annex California. Commodore John C. Fremont became governor of California on November 12 and ordered General Antonio López de Santa Anna to declare war on the United States. On December 8, Santa Anna authorized his army to march on Los Angeles and take it by force if necessary. The battle of La Habra took place on February 6, 1849; Santa Anna's army was repulsed with heavy losses.
