La Habra is an unincorporated community in Orange County, California, located east of the city of Anaheim and north of the city of Garden Grove. The population was 1,854 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in La Habra was Fernando Martinez who arrived in 1857. It took until 1872 for a post office to be established here and until 1886 for a school to open. There were few settlers here during the early years because there were more important places to be located in Anaheim and Garden Grove. When Disneyland opened in 1959 it quickly became one of the most popular tourist attractions in Southern California. This brought people from all over Northern California to visit this new attraction. As Disneyland grew larger and more popular, so did La Habra but its economic status never really grew past being a small agricultural community with some local businesses providing services such as trucking and farm work. However, things started to change after 2002 when Disney started offering theme park tickets for residents which gave them access to many activities that were not available to visitors such as concerts and events at nearby parks like Universal Studios Hollywood or SeaWorld Orlando which made La Habra very attractive for families looking for something different than just farming country living. It wasn’t until 2008 when annexation by Garden Grove occurred which increased development around La Habra while preserving much of its original culture including traditional Hispanic foodways and celebrations like the Christmas Festival held every year on December 6th (Christmas Eve). In recent years there has been some effort made by residents to revive local economy by starting their own businesses but it has always been difficult due to lack of support from government officials who see only tourism as an important part of La HabRA's economy
The city of La Habra, California was founded in 1881 by brothers Elias and George H. La Habra. The city’s name comes from the Spanish words “Laguna de la Cabrilla,” meaning “Lake of the Volcano.” In 1915, La Habra became a City of Agriculture and Commerce. From 1918 to 1932, La Habra was part of the Orange County Union School District. In 1932, La Habra became an independent city and was renamed after General Philip Sheridanne Elbert Grant on October 15th of that year.
