The first Europeans to visit what is now La Habra were Spanish missionaries who traveled there in 1769 as part of their evangelization campaign. In 1821, La Habra was founded by Captain John Sutter as an outpost on Rancho Cucamonga Boulevard east of present-day Mission Road. The City of La Habra was incorporated on February 2, 1912 from parts of Imperial and Riverside Counties. On November 5, 1916, it became a part of the newly formed City of Hollywood when all but Imperial and Riverside Counties seceded from Hollywood to form that city. The economy has been based largely on agriculture for centuries with some manufacturing brought in during the 20th century; however, recent years have seen significant growth in information technology (IT) and other service industries along with modest growth in traditional agricultural activities such as ranching or fishing. What is La Habra? La Habra is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was estimated to be over 100,000 at the 2010 census. It is located about 25 miles (40 km) west of downtown Los Angeles and 20 miles (32 km) east of Orange County's central business district. La Habra has a year-round temperate climate with mild winters and hot summers. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, La Habra has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, abbreviated "Csb" onClimate Maps. The first permanent settlers in what is now La Habra were French people who arrived in 1821 as part of an expedition led by Captain Jean-Baptiste Bissonnet from Naha on Tahiti. They called their new land Nouvelle Calaïbe after the Spanish town of Alcobaça near Barcelona which they had seen while sailing on the Pacific Ocean voyage under Captains Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo and Diego de Alvarado. The first post office was established in 1827 and named Fort Ontario; it was moved to its present location in 1841 when Fort Point navy base was built nearby. In 1834 a group of Englishmen who had come ashore on Catalina Island founded Castle Hills Rancho Seco which included land that now includes most of La Habra Cove between Harbor Boulevard and Paseo del Norte Street; this area became known as Castle Hills because it served as their Rancho Seco summer home until 1943 when it reverted back to its original name following World War II efforts by the United States military to improve communications between naval installations at Long Beach Torrance and El Segundo Naval Air Station). In 1839 two brothers, Lorenzo de la Hacha y Aguayo (1808-1881) and José Antonio Reyes y Aguayo (1784-1868), bought 5 square leagues or 16 acres (6 ha) north of present day City Hall from Pedro Menéndez for $5 per acre ($100 per hectare). This area became known as San Jacinto Park after King Philip IV's grantee for that portion of California, Santa Clara Mission Bay Estates granted by Spain to Junípero Serrano in 1777. The brothers also acquired 2 square leagues or 4½ acres (1 ha), south of present day City Hall from Manuel Nieto for $2 peracre ($20 per hectare). These lands became known as East Meadow because they lay across East Meadow Creek from what is now Villa Park Drive fronting Imperial Highway/State Route 157/Paseo del Norte Street before becoming part of the city limits.) A few years later another group purchased 8 square leagues or 24 acres (10 ha) east side Lots 15 & 16 from José Miguel Román for $2 peracre ($20 per hectare). This lot formed today's eastern boundary line between Chavez Ravine southwest corner IH 10W & North Avenue east side lots 3N & 4E currently occupied by Cathedral School property; Cathedral School property also makes up much of modern day Northfield Village within city limits.) This second group also purchased 1½ square leagues or 6 ½ acres (3 ha), northwest cornerLots 7 & 8 from Francisco Javier Bordallo for $2($30 each acre)). Bordallo had owned sections 5&6NW adjacent NW corner lot 11G formerly used as quarry site adjoining Upper Antelope Canyon Preserve.) This property became known as Southwest Heathcoting because it adjoined Norton Heights Cemetery which straddles Corona Road/Southwest Freeway just south southeast corner LOT 27D donated by Drs., Mrs., Sr., Mrs.. incorporated therein 1949)), thenceforth Southwest Heathcoting.). It should be noted that no deed ever surfaced documenting any purchase transaction more than six weeks old! It seems likely that these purchases were made without any idea whatsoever about where they would ultimately end up! ). One wonders if these initial settlers did not know anything about Today’s City Limits – annexation boundaries – being laid out exactly like they are today??? ). A decade later another group purchased 2 square league or 4 ½ acres (.1 ha), northeast cornerLot 11G formerly used as quarry site adjoining Upper Antelope Canyon Preserve.), thenceforth Northwest Heathcoting.). German immigrant Johann Georg Weise established his farmstead at Northeast Corner LOT 31D donated by Drs., Mrs., Jr.. incorporation therein 1949)), thenceforth Northwest Heathcoting.). Another early settler was Johnnie Sisk who arrived October 9th 1850 aboard ship SS Cyclone off coast Of Mexico Landing Lagoon.; he disembarked at Little Havasu Bay,, Present Day Cameron Valley,, Arizoma Coastactus Wilderness National Monument
