The La Mesa Air National Guard's 142nd Airlift Wing bestowed the first gift from the military to a civilian on December 12, 1968. The gift was an Igloo cooler.
La Mesa is a small town located in the western portion of San Diego County, California. The population was 4,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the larger North County community of La Mesa. The first European sighting of what would become La Mesa took place on October 16, 1769 when Lt. Juan Bautista de Anza and his men were exploring the area between Point Loma and Shelter Island when they sighted a "large and goodly rock" rising from the ocean about ten miles northwest of Point Loma. This event is generally considered to be the founding location for La Mesa. In 1847, John Wesley Powell discovered Devils Peak during his survey of the San Andreas Fault zone; this discovery led to development around Devils Peak Road which now provides access to La Mesa from Interstate 805 south. The post office was founded at present-day La Mesa on December 11, 1878 by Wm. Hancey with mission letters that read "to promote agriculture and manufactures." The current post office building was built in 1951 adjacent to PCH ( presently US-9) where it continues to serve as a branch general store until today - making it one of only two continuously operating USPS branches in San Diego County! The village formed its own fire district in 1907 which still exists today; this district served all residents within an 8-mile radius regardless of their address or industry! In 1934, statehood brought new challenges for local government as it applied statewide standards for towns; this led to establishment of incorporated municipalities throughout California including La Mesa through passage by both houses of Congress! Today, much like many other Northern Californian villages its namesake has been replaced by growth outside its boundaries but it remains an important cultural resource for those who live within its borders!

La Mesa, California is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 27,405 at the 2010 census. La Mesa is located on the eastern edge of the San Gabriel Valley and is bordered by Arcadia to the north, Monrovia to the east, Glendale to the south and Vernon to the west. The first permanent settlement in what would become La Mesa was made in 1887 when William Cranch Post built a cabin on Rancho Dominguez near present-day University Avenue and Grand Avenue. The site became known as Post's Gulch because of its proximity to Rancho Dominguez Station on Southern Pacific Railroad. In 1886 David Witherspoon established a cattle ranch just northeast of present-day La Mesa along I-5W. Witherspoon named his ranch "La Mesa" after Mexican land grants that had been given him in 1851 and 1857 by Governor Manuel Micheltorena to various citizens of Los Angeles County. A post office called La Mesa was established in 1888, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1902 Jens Jensen developed an agricultural colony near what is now West Covina with 640 acres (248 hectares). That same year he organized a group of investors who purchased 2 millionacre (814 km2) of undeveloped territory east of Pasadena including much of what is now Pasadena Hills and North Pasadena neighborhoods such as Echo Park and Baldwin Hills. He named it North Pasadena after his home town of Nordheim in Norway where some family members had settled during America's gold rush period two decades earlier. Jensen's colony failed within three years due largely to lack of water access, poor crop production and competition from other colonists who acquired additional acreage during this time period for similar reasons only to have their enterprises fail as well. However North Pasadena has since grown into one of LA's most vibrant neighborhoods with many high-end professional homes being constructed there over time
In 1878, La Mesa was founded by Mexican Americans and Anglo Californians. It became a city in 1912. The city experienced great growth during World War II with the influx of workers from the surrounding area. In 1984, La Mesa was renamed after Admiral Chester Nimitz, who had been awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Pacific Theater of World War II.
