The first USAF graduate, John F. Kennedy, became president of the United States on Jan. 20, 1961. The USAF provides air superiority over all battlefields with bombers and fighters; it also promotes space exploration and development of launch vehicles and spacecraft for manned flights to Mars or other destinations in outer space.
La Mesa is located in the San Diego County, California area and has been home to people for over 10,000 years. The first Europeans to visit La Mesa were the Spanish Missionaries on December 8, 1769. The mission was established by Father Francisco Sanchez from Padre Island in San Diego County. It was known as San Pedro de la Mora. After the missions were abandoned in 1821, the land around La Mesa became open space. On July 4, 1890, a group of men from Bakersfield founded an agricultural colony called Rancho La Mesa near present-day La Mesa Boulevard and El Centro Avenue. The settlers had arrived on horseback and wagon trains from all over Southern California looking for new land to farm and build homes on. By 1893, they had built a town square with flagpole and courthouse where they meet every day to trade goods and services. They named their settlement after José María Moreno y Pacheco who had helped them find the land west of downtown Los Angeles when they started out searching for it in 1849. In 1898, Mexican President Porfirio Díaz decided to end internal warfare across Mexico by creating a commission that would oversee Mexican American Affairs within his newly created United States of America. Ramos de Torres developed what is now known as Tecate which was part of this original rancho boundary between Bakersfield and La Mesa areas today’s Avenida César Chávez (former U S exit 95) & Park Drive
The La Mesa area was first settled in the early 1800s by Mexican-Americans. The area became a part of the United States following the Mexican-American War. In 1851, La Mesa was named after General José de la Mesa y Cerda, who led an army against Mexico.
