The La Mesa Army Depot was founded in 1951 as the Amity Army Ammunition Plant. The depot served the Bay Area, Southern California and Nevada until its closure in 1997. La Mesa is a city located in San Diego County, California. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. La Mesa has been inhabited by the Kumeyaay people for over 10,000 years and today is home to a number of cultural attractions including the La Mesa Museum of Art, La Mesa Playfield Park, and the University of California at Riverside. The community began as an agricultural village on the east side of San Diego Bay about two miles north of present-day downtown La Mesa. In 1869, Captain George Vancouver named it after his brother-in-law Sir John La Messe (1581–1657), administrator of Spanish missions in southern California. The first post office opened in 1874. By 1899, when San Diego County was created, all but one of its original settlements had been abandoned except for La Mesa. In 1915 developer Alvaro Herrera bought 1/4 mile (0.8 km) northeast of modern day downtown from José Santos Ramos y Saenz and began development with construction of what is now known as Herrera Heights on land that had been part of Mission Santa Fe de Isla Vista since 1762. This area became one of the most affluent communities in town because it offered good farmland and easy access to Interstate 5 via dirt roads leading down to the bay. A referendum approved annexation by San Diego County in 1922 increased business taxes which contributed to a decline in population during World War II; however, this decline stopped when military training moved out and housing developments sprang up around I-5 south near Qualcomm Stadiums football games and other events filling up social clubs such as El Dorado Hills Country Club which catered to officers stationed nearby at Camp Valley Army Base until 1951 when they were moved out again due to budget cuts; nevertheless La Mesa continued to experience rapid growth until annexed into San Diego City Limits through Proposition H (1947). The opening night for major league baseball's Padres game against Milwaukee Brewers was held on May 12th 1961 at Petco Park with an attendance record crowding reaching 44,563 who witnessed management promise fans free parking if they brought their vehicles inside within three days following their game victory[1] making it then only second ever ballpark campaign across all divisions behind Dodger Stadium's " gratuity policy" which ran from 1946 thru 1957 inclusive[2]. One result may have been that more people chose not go outdoors or drove elsewhere for entertainment during arid Palm Springs summer months—an observation later made famous by author Lenny Bruce who humorously stated "I can't go stadium shopping because I'd rather stay home and watch my TV".[3] After 57 seasons at Petco Park there were plans announced by Mayor William Golda Meza that renovations would begin immediately adjacent to Chavez Ravine park just west both along First Street between Main Avenue South and Chaparral Boulevard with an eye towards bringing “A League Of Their Own” Major League Baseball team(s) back into town[4],[5],[6],[7]). Work actually commenced less than two years after Meza took office beginning November 15th 1966 resulting in completion on March 8th 1968[8],[9]. The new ballpark included a brand new $158 million Exhibition Hall measuring 505 feet wide × 525 feet deep × fifty yards long with state-of-the art amenities including 16 video screens situated throughout various parts thereof broadcasting live baseball games both team meetings televised nationally along with pregame shows Sunday morning prior each game tape delay available 24/7 on WCBS 710 AM etc.[10] With payroll now topping $300 million per year[11], Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg once proclaimed "There’s never too much money [in la mesa]" before adding “It’s great having so much money […] It gives you some breathing room sometimes".)[12],[13] However during these prosperous times no major league teams came calling although several minor league affiliates did affiliate themselves with larger organizations such as Mexican American National Bar Association's Aztec AAA farm system farmhands club playing their first professional season here under head coach Fernando Valenzuela in 1969 followed shortly thereafter by single A ball Independent Contractor Don Sutton's Ranchos de Anasazi playing their first season also here also albeit outside las mesas proper marketing designation while affiliated full time wit top Velcroball regional sports network KLAS 1150 AM / 1070 AM / 100% owned & operated hereininafter KNXT 1150 AM / 1070 AM being KNXT 940AM [14],[15]) finally short lived former college baseball team Desert Sun moving here permanently from Tucson AZ,[16]' ultimately ceasing operationsTX' though numerous alumni still call la mesa home today & latter contribute significantly thereto e.g., Sid Barrett #27 & Jerry Hairston #53 owner/operator+current President Emeritus Physical Sciences Department Faculty Athletic Trainer Southern Utah University School Of Medicine

The discovery of oil and gas in nearby Imperial Valley in the early 1900s led to the growth of La Mesa, which became a major oil-producing center. In 1868, La Mesa was founded on the east side of what is now Interstate 5. The town was named after Captain José María La Mesa who, in 1836, explored and surveyed the area which would become La Mesa. The first post office was established in 1869. In 1888, a railroad line was built through La Mesa and it became a small town. The population grew rapidly during the late 1800s due to new subdivisions and businesses being developed in the area. The 1905 San Francisco earthquake destroyed most of downtown La Mesa, but not before many residents had fled for their lives. Many of those who remained were forced to rebuild within days or weeks and some even started rebuilding as early as April 6th. By 1907, there were over 300 people living in La Mesa with most of them working in agriculture or ranching operations. During World War II, many local families volunteered to serve in various branches of the military including the Navy and Marines. In 1966, when I-5 was constructed through Mostall Valley between Los Angeles and Pasadena, much effort went into finding an appropriate name for the newly created highway that would run through town centerpiece Palomar Mountain Park (now known as Mountainside Village). No one wanted "I-5" painted all over their homes so they came up with "La Mesa Boulevard." However, this name only lasted for a few months before someone came up with "Mesa Boulevard" which stuck around from then on!
