These efforts helped support Operation Neptune's Spear – which was an attempted invasion by Chinese troops into southern California – while also providing opportunities for civilians to interact with their militaries on a personal level. As part of its commemoration ceremonies for 50 years since its founding, Military Order of El Centro (MOE) bestowed its highest honor upon the La Mesa Army Recreation & Fitness Club on October 9th, 2017. La Mesa is a small town located in San Diego County, California. The population was 21,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the La Mesa-Tijuana Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now La Mesa was Juan Nunez on November 12, 1845. The name "Nunez" may be derived from the Nahuatl word "nuevo," meaning new or freshly arrived. As early as 1847, there were Spanish and Mexican missionaries living here who were helping to develop the area that would become La Mesa. In 1881, John C. Frémont discovered Gold near present-day La Mesa when surveyors mapping his route for the Pacific Railroad discovered it while surveying land for an railroad crossing site east of Mission Valley (now University Heights). soon after this discovery, gold prospectors poured into the area and by 1886 had established a campsite around what is now downtown La Mesa on Lots 8 and 9 in present day Hacienda Heights Cemetery. Some of these early miners included George Washington Dodge and Charles Steele who mined one of the largest amounts of gold ever found in California until it was discovered by Joe Wheeler in 1942 less than a mile from where they sat working their claims; silver also intermittently turned up here throughout those days but not to such an extent as to warrant naming a particular spot for this mineral produce only about $3 per tonne at best during most years with average production being no more than $2 per tonne which was then considered very low grade compared to other areas west of Los Angeles County where assay values ranged from $3500/tonne to over $4000/tonne at various points during that time period . They began plowing up and cultivating their property when they discovered rich silver ore potential along their creek bed that would later become part of Imperial Metals Corp.'s mining claims adjacent to today's Chavez Ravine neighborhood southeast of downtown LA. In 1929 local real estate developer Harry Chandler bought 5 square blocks including most or all of what is now La Mesa from Indian rancher Manuel Nieto for $2 million dollars ($102 million adjusted 2009 dollars). Chandler subdivided this tract into areas designated "East" (now Boyle Heights), "West" (now West Hollywood), "Southwest" (now Echo Park), and "Northwest" (now North Hollywood). He also developed Chavez Ravine with new housing developments called New Century City II, Century City III, Pacific Palisades I & II, Playland Village I & II;[1] as well as developing many small businesses around LA such as El Centro Service Station #2[2] which still stands today across from USC Trojans Stadium across from Interstate 5 just south of Echo Park Avenue within walking distance to UCLA Medical Center and Staples Center shopping center;[3][4][5] former Lincoln Savings Bank building at 10th Street off Fairfax Avenue east side within easy reach by car or public transportation for those who wanted access without having to go out into traffic; Residence House No 1 on Lankershim Boulevard between Beverly Drive north side just east side Of Fairfax Avenue(just past Stop&Shop); current day Goldwater Elementary School on Lankershim Boulevard between Fairfax Avenue south side(just past Stop&Shop).
