The Coast Guard Station was moved from its original location on Paseo de la Reforma to its current location on Vista del Mar in 1948. In 1974, the Coast Guard Station changed its name to the Marine Mammal Research Center and in 1983, it became a marine mammal center.
La Mesa, California is a small city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 10,838 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous community in Contra Costa County and the second-most populous city in Northern California after San Francisco. La Mesa is located on the southern edge of Silicon Valley. The first Europeans to visit what is now La Mesa were Spanish missionaries in 1821. The town site was patented in 1845 by John Sutter, founder of Sacramento. In 1854, La Mesa incorporated as a city, becoming one of the largest in California.During its early years, La Mesa was known for its rich agricultural land and fertile valleys which were used for growing fruits and vegetables. The history of La Mesa can be traced back to 1832 when Captain John C. Fremont and his wife, Marilla arrived in what is now known as La Mesa from Sacramento County with their five children after fleeing Mexican rule at the height of the Mexican Empire under Governor Alvarado. After some initial difficulties with finding land they were able to purchase about two square miles (3 km2) near present-day downtown La Mesa from José Maria Sanchez y Soto on July 10,1832 for $1 per acre (0·7 ha).
