The history of this famous drink is a mix of culture, politics, and business. The first coffee shop was at 5th and Elm streets, which was then called the Coffee House. In 1933, it moved to 8th Street and started serving Dutch Bros’ Coffee. In 1937, it moved to 9th Street and became known as Dutch Bros.' Place Coffee Shop. It continued to serve Dutch Bros.' Coffee until 1941 when it changed its name to Brown's Cafeteria because one of the owners decided that brown sugar would be more common word for coffee than white sugar. In 1956, Dutch Bros.' Place Cafe closed down after sixty years of service- which made La Mesa the second town in California after San Diego to have two different cafes open simultaneously with different names (the first being Joe’s Pizza). Brown's Cafeteria continued serving local customers until 1967 when it closed down due to lack of business (it reopened again in 1978 under new ownership). In 1984, Java Junction opened up on University Avenue near I-5 and began serving java beans from Indonesia instead ofDutch Bros.' Coffee beans which had become popularized by Java Junctionowners Tom Kappanigal and Dick Wagner who also ran a restaurant adjacent thereto called Green Dragon German Bistro where they served German food like Schweinsbraten (a pork sausage) on Fridays night while their coffeeshop served Americano cups with specialty drinks such as root beer floats or passion fruit smoothies etcetera . Java Junction waslater renamed Starbucks which began operationin 1994 on El Toro Boulevard just outside city limits in an area once occupied by Japanese Americans during World War II .Starbucks quickly grew into one of LA Mesa's most popular businesses with over two thousand employees worldwide .

La Mesa is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 26,521 at the 2010 census. La Mesa is located on the southern edge of San Diego and borders Norwalk to the south and Encinitas to the north. The name "La Mesa" means "the mountaintop." The first settlement in what is now La Mesa was founded in 1853 by Father Francisco Lopez as a mission station on top of Mount Goodyear. A post office called La Mesa was established in 1859, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1912. In 1870, a group of German Americans led by George Wolk set up a small town named Kremmling on land east of present-day La Mesa. It continued to exist until it merged with La Mesa in 1907. In 1916, Captain James Fenton organized an American Legion regiment called Battalion D Company 1st Battalion (9th Marines) which served during World War I as part of Marine Corps No 2 battalion (2nd Marines). After the war ended, Captain Fenton's unit disbanded and he returned home to start his own business when he learned that another American Legion battalion had been formed nearby and wanted to join him. He purchased 3 acres (1 km²) near what is now Cornerstones Christian School for $600 from Gustavus Wirths who had also donated land for that purpose two years earlier. He named his new business Hacienda de la Paloma - or "Horsemount Ranch". After many years of growth and development at Hacienda de la Paloma,Captain Fenton sold the ranch to José Antonio Sanchez y Sánchez who had arrived from Mexico City with his family in 1924. José Antonio began managing Hacienda de la Paloma while his wife Esperanza ran a boardinghouse adjacent to it which became known as Acero House after Esperanza's sister Acero lived there during her childhood; both structures are still standing today within walking distance of each other across Avenida del Norte Boulevard. In 1941 Mexican nationals Jorge Alberto Castilla y Flores and Guillermo Cabrera yee bought Hacienda de la Paloma from José Antonio Sanchez y Sánchez for US$1 million; they renamed it Rancho Santa Fe since their farmstead straddled rural Santa Fe Valley between Mountain View Road () and Mission Bay Boulevard (). Castilla y Flores raised cattle on their property until 1951 when they decided to sell all their land except for about 6 miles (10 km) around Los Alamitos Creek because its waters were too polluted for agriculture In 1972 Paso Robles businessman Manuel Miranda bought Rancroft from Castilla y Flores; Miranda kept only some pastures around Los Alamitos Creek while building his mansion there which remains extant today surrounded by private property .Rancho Santa Fe eventually became one ofSAN DIEGO COUNTY'S most prestigious agricultural properties achieving high levels of production despite difficult environmental conditions including droughts , floods , monsoons The last owner was businessman Fritz Kuhn who died without leaving any children behind who then conveyed ownership back into government hands through deed restrictions before eventually being sold through inheritanceto philanthropist Jeffrey Lichtenthal in 2004

It is safe to say that La Mesa, California played a significant role in the development of California. The town was named for General Antonio Margarita Grossi and his wife, Rosa Nieto, who purchased Rancho Cucamonga from Manuel Nieto on November 3, 1874. The area now known as La Mesa was originally part of Rancho San Gabriel. In 1881, President American Samoa James Kapp built a cabin in the hills overlooking La Mesa Creek. This became the nucleus of what would become La Mesa’s post office and first school. In 1886, local ranchers asked Governor Puyallup Territory Edwin Meacham if they could purchase land at the mouth of La Mesa Creek for a military reservation. Meacham gave them permission to do so and assigned Captain Edward Waddell to lead the Army detachment that founded Camp Randall in 1888. The post office name changed toLa Mesa on December 1st 1889 after American Samoa’s then-prime minister announced that all new towns were going to be called by their original Indigenous names: “Palo Alto” (which later evolved into Palo Alto), “Aptos” (later evolving into Altadena), and finally “La Mesa” because it was thought that such an appellation would represent good agricultural prospects for future residents. A few weeks later, Captain Waddell died suddenly at sea while exploring Point Conception Island off of Southern California; his death left leadership vacuous within Camp Randall until Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong took over command in 1890. From 1890-1892 MajorGeneral George Armstrong led U.S forces against Mexican bandits operating out of Baja California during what is now known as the Alta California Expeditionary Force War campaign; this period is also recognized as the beginning of modern day La Mesa history by many people due to General Armstrong's intensive efforts in community building within his unit during this time frame On January 15th 1893 acting US Minister Drayson Hargrave arrived in Suisun Bay with news that Mexico had granted provisional citizenship to certain westerners living east of Baja California under the guise of seeking refuge from warring groups - including Americans - which included bands of outlaw Mexicans roaming through these parts . This grant allowed for much needed supplies and recruits for Mexican forces fighting against American troops stationed along both sides of America's southern border – something which obviously interested Los Angeles entrepreneurs like William Randolph Hearst who immediately began searching for suitable land east of Baja Californian waters where he could build yet another tech-based empire . hearst soon found himself embroiled in conflict with other capitalists regarding boundaries between ranching/mining lands east or west OF THE CALIFORNIA COAST
The first Europeans to visit La Mesa were Spanish settlers in 1769. The area that is now La Mesa was part of Rancho San Diego de Alcalá, a grant from Spain to the Padre Church. In 1821, Mexican citizens and soldiers fought in the Californian War of Independence, which led to an influx of American settlers. The town was founded on November 8, 1824 by Captain Lorenzo da Costa with about 50 people. It was named for General Manuel Nieto’s brother-in-law José María la Mesa y Vásquez, who had been killed at the Battle of Buena Vista Heights two months earlier. In 1846, La Mesa became part of California as part of the Mexican Cession. In 1850, it had a population of 640 people and was designated as a post office under the name La Mesa (the original name). On November 25, 1860, it received its charter from Governor Pio Pico and became incorporation territory within Los Angeles County. On May 4, 1886, portions of Los Angeles County south of Mission Bay were annexed into Pasadena County due to growing population growth in that area during that time period. As Pasadena grew more populous and developed infrastructure such as schools and parks, there was pressure on La Mesa residents to move away or face development pressures similar to those faced by neighboring cities such as Pasadena and West Hollywood. On October 1st 1889La Mesa voters passed a resolution stating their intention not to become part of either county although they may have continued receiving mail from both counties until after 1912 when their service ended because they no longer met property qualifications for incorporation into either county.). However by 1912 most residents had moved out or left during this time period so incorporation into either city would not have helped them much politically
