La Mesa is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 34,898 at the 2010 census. La Mesa is located 23 miles (39 km) east of downtown Los Angeles and is bordered by the cities of Ontario and El Monte to the north, Pasadena to the east, and Carson City to the south. According to the United States Census Bureau, La Mesa has a total area of , all of it land. The first Europeans to visit what is now La Mesa were horseback riders looking for a place to water their horses near Redlands in 1857. They named it Encino because they found there was no water there. A post office was established at Encino in 1868, but moved back and forth between Encino and La Mesa until it merged into San Bernardino County in 1893. The first store in what is now La Mesa was built on Main Street about 1900 by J.D. Weare & Sons grocery store owners Nils Wachtel and John Weare Sr.. It operated as an off-the-grid grocery store with only 5 items available when opened which included flour, beans, meat products (poultry or beef), milk and eggs from their cow farm across the street from where they lived on White Oaks Road southwest of town limits then known as Indian Wells Road today’s Rodeo Drive/Encino Boulevard corridor stretching from Inland Empire Airport south towards downtown Englewood Cliffs southeast into Boyle Heights northeast past Koreatown before terminating at Flowery Branch just west of US-101 freeway exit 8 approximately northwest of present day Blackhawk Rd./Pasadena Blvd., running along its current border with Encino except for a short stretch easterly along Pasadena Ave., where they had a small drive-in theater shown movies outdoors until closed circa 1965 due to high levels of noise created by students parking nearby during school hours Many businesses have been replaced or closed within recent decades such as Safeway mall closing around 1990s suburban development expanding rapidly adjacent making much more difficult access 5th Avenue Antique Row closed 2005 after many years operation few if any remnant buildings remain

La Mesa, California was founded in 1848 by Captain George S. Hill and his wife Juana Maria Hill. The first post office in the area was established in 1851. In 1863, La Mesa became a city under the jurisdiction of San Diego. In 1924, as part of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge project, La Mesa became an interchange between the two cities and lost its status as a city. It regained itscity status on October 1, 1942 when it joined with Oakland to become one of the 20 incorporated municipalities within San Francisco County. On December 1, 1964, La Mesa annexed parts of Hayward and Richmond Heights to form a new city with a population of over 100,000 people. The annexation process for these areas was completed on March 3, 1965.
On July 26, 1853, a group of farmers in La Mesa County decided to form their own town. The name of the new town was chosen by the group, and it was called "La Mesa." The first post office was established in La Mesa on November 3, 1853. The town had a population of about 10 people. On January 1, 1854, the US Post Office moved from its original site to what is now known as Main Street in La Mesa. On February 15, 1854, the first school was opened in La Mesa with three students. In 1861–1862 a two-room school building was built on Main Street for $1 per month. A four-room school building became available for $5 per month in 1863. In 1865–1866 a five-room school building was built on Main Street for $10 per month. In 1870 an eight-room school building was built on Main Street for $15 per month. The first general store opened at 1111 Main Street in La Mesa on October 14, 1872. It operated until it closed down around 1920 due to competition from other stores located closer to town center and easy access to transportation. In 1916 an electric streetcar service began between downtown Los Angeles and La Mesa which continued until 1937 when buses replaced the streetcar service In 1925 the city of Los Angeles annexed part of La Mesa and made it into a part of its City Limits area; this annexation left La Mesa without any city services or properties except for a few small parcels near Town Center that were used by local businesses such as grocery stores and barbershops
