La Mesa is located on the eastern edge of the San Diego metropolitan area and is bordered by Carlsbad to the north, Miramar to the east, Garden Grove to the south, and Escondido to the west. The first Europeans to visit what is now La Mesa were Spanish explorers in 1769. Rancho El Centro de la Californias (later Torreón) was established in 1821 by Francisco Palomo and his partners John Sutter and George Cascadden. It became part of Alta California following Mexican independence from Spain in 1848. In 1858, James Irvine purchased Rancho La Mesa from Francisco Palomo for $5,000. In 1861 it was renamed Irvine City after James Irvine, Governor of Alta California during its early years as a municipality. The city limits were enlarged in 1899 when Morongo Canyon came into being east of Town Center Drive and northeast of Vine Street; it had been annexed by Irvine City since 1860 but never incorporated as a separate town until that time due to objections from other municipalities within San Diego County about becoming too big for their own townships. Irvine City annexed much of neighboring Carlsbad on April 14, 1912 following a vote by residents of those communities over annexation proposals made by sheriff's deputies working for then-Mayor Robert Waddell.
