La Mesa is a small city located in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 23,993 at the 2010 census. It is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in Southern California, with a large non-Hispanic white and Latino population as well as sizeable Chinese and Filipino populations. La Mesa's unique architecture and history are based on its location on an agricultural rancho that grew up around Mission San Diego de Alcalá. The first Europeans to visit La Mesa were the Morongo people from Baja California who landed in 1769 on foot near what is now known as Point Loma. From there they started trading with the area's Native Americans and Spanish colonists. On November 4, 1821, Mission San Diego de Alcalá was founded by Franciscan missionaries under leadership of Father José Gomez y Uribe. The mission was originally called " Nuestra Señora de Alcalá" (Our Lady of Alcalá). In 1838 Antonio Vaca Blanco discovered gold at Rancho Rincon del Sur which led to increased activity at Mission San Diego de Alcalá. In 1846 Mexican president Vicente Guerrero ordered Captain Fernando Sánchez to destroy all Mission churches and properties in Los Angeles County including La Mesa because he felt they were aiding American forces during the Mexican–American War fought between United States of America (US) and Mexico. This event is known as theainteda or la catrina (the Destruction). During World War II, many businesses were closed due to wartime rationing but some such as Jardín Chino opened again after hostilities ended in 1945. After American entry into World War II, much development took place within La Mesa with numerous homes being constructed for military personnel stationed throughout Southern California; however these homes soon failed to sustain themselves after peace returned to southern California following war; this was largely due to Interstate 5 which passed through La Mesa making it difficult for businesses to thrive outside of downtown LA without compromising their access to I-5 traffic or customers inside of downtown LA itself). As a result many local residents chose not return home during peacetime while others either left their homes altogether or moved away completely when post-war suburban sprawl became common across southcentral Los Angeles County particularly northwest Riverside County populated primarily by Latinos seeking cheaper housing than found eastside Orange County *.
