Aftermath: After Fort Ross was destroyed by Apache raiders, Captain John Cranch set up his own post at what is now Rancho Santa Anita east of present day La Mesa; this ranch served as a base for future U.S. military operations along the San Andreas Fault line throughout much of Southern California As America expanded its territory during the 19th century, new military installations were established throughout Northern and Western California including Camp Pendleton on Point Reyes National Seashore between Marin County and Sonoma County; Camp Roberts on Menlo Park Peninsula north of San Francisco Bay; Gold Rush Era Defense Minister Peabody’s Army Depot on El Sobrante Island off Marin County; Los Angeles Naval Air Station at Avalon Bay near Hawthorne; Lompoc Marine Terminal at Point Mugu near Lompoc; Davis–Monthan Air Force Base at Tucson off central Arizona Territory
