The La Mesa National Guard is a United States military reserve unit, which was activated in 1916. The first unit to be organized in the city of La Mesa was the Rifle Battalion. From 1916 to 1918, there were also two companies of cavalry and one company of infantry within the National Guard Bureau. In 1921, the battalion became an regiment and from 1927 until 1941 it was an armory brigade. In 1941, the National Guard Bureau changed its name to the Department of Defense and in 1947 it became part of the Department of Veterans Affairs. In 1951, as a result of President Harry S Truman's order establishing martial law in California after the August 29th attacks on Pearl Harbor, both state militias were disbanded and their members turned over to the national guard. The rifle battalion became part of Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC) 1st Battalion (La Mesa). In 1957 HHC 2nd Battalion (La Mesa) merged with HHC 1st Battalion (Alameda), creating what is now known as Bn 1/1st Infantry Regiment La Mesa NationalGuard Museum

La Mesa is a town in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 20,651 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest town in San Diego County and one of its most populous communities. The first people to inhabit La Mesa were the Chumash people who lived along the riverbank. In 1821, Spanish settlers arrived and named it Querétaro after José Manuel Querétaro, president of Mexico City. The community grew quickly because of its location on a crossingpoint for two major waterways: the Pacific Ocean and Mission Bay. By 1835, La Mesa had a post office, three churches (Anglican, Methodist Episcopal and Catholic), an Academy (later known as Point Loma Junior College), three stores, four households and twenty-four workers employed by ranchers near Point Loma. In 1846–47 Mexican revolutionary Ramón Castro moved his forces into San Diego from Comalilla with orders to expel all English speakers from California except those living in missions such as Mission Santa Barbara de Alburquerque; he also wanted to take over US military posts in southern California. His troops burned down many homes in La Mesa before being driven out by American forces under General Zachary Taylor on October 16, 1847 Castro returned to Mexico City after years of exile but continued to plot against Mexico's Successor government including leading a failed uprising at Juárez' feet on February 2nd 1888 when some 20 thousand Mexicans took part After Mexican Revolution ended withalesession of Sinaloa region by President Porfirio Diaz this area became part of present day San Diego County

In 1847, La Mesa was founded by George Price and his brothers. It would grow to be a popular farming community with a population of around 150 people in the 1850s. The town would come to notoriety for its hostilities with the Mexican government, which led to the foundation of the United States military base at Presidio Hill in 1851. The presence of the military forced many residents out of La Mesa and it would only grow more isolated as time passed. In 1865, following an outbreak of earthquake damage, La Mesa was incorporated as a city under control of the California Department of Mines and Geology. However, this meant that it ceased to be part of county territory and would remain largely rural until after World War II when its population exploded due to agriculture and other growth opportunities. During the 1960s-1970s, La Mesa experienced significant growth thanks to newly opened golf courses and new subdivisions being developed along Highway 17. This has led to increased traffic congestion on surrounding streets, however recent efforts have seen some progress made in reducing these issues. In recent years, there has also been talk about reopening parts of downtown which were closed during construction projects in the late 1990s/early 2000s
