La Mesa, California is a city in San Diego County, California. The population was 25,604 at the 2010 census. La Mesa is located on the Malibu Peninsula and is bordered by Encinitas to the south and west and Poway to the north. The history of La Mesa can be traced back to 1853 when two brothers named George and James La Mesa settled on Rancho Los Nietos, east of present-day La Mesa. In 1857, they sold their rancho for $1 million to José Gámez Cisneros. In 1875, Alice Bickerton purchased an adjacent piece of land from José Gámez Cisneros for $15 per acre. She named her new land "La Mesa" after her maternal grandmother's name which she had also been given as a gift from her mother. Mrs. Bickerton farmed the land until 1923 when she sold it to Hilda Monsegur who organized what would become known as the Downey Community School District (later known as Monterey Unified School District). In 1922, David Sanger developed what would later become known as Sanger Park in northeastern La Mesa; he donated 360 acres (14 km²) of his property for this purpose. The park became a community center with tennis courts, a gymnasium/fitness room, water sports amenities including an Olympic-sized pool and a spa., educational facilities such as libraries and schools., nightlife businesses such as disc jockeys playing live music all night long., retail stores including Safeway supermarkets (), restaurants (), service stations (), medical offices (), etc.. La Mesa is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 29,806 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the new City of Riverside. La Mesa is one of three cities and two unincorporated communities comprising Riverside metropolitan area. The first inhabitants were Native Americans who lived in what is now La Mesa along present day routes 10 and 192. In 1851, John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort on the east side of town to protect his Rancho Gunnison land from Mexican aggression. In 1853, an act called for all towns within San Bernardino county to be incorporated into a single entity known as "Riverside". The incorporation date for La Mesa was April 16th, 1854. As part of this process, Streets and Highways Department created a road map for the town that still exists today including current route 10 (now US-101) as well as less traveled roads such as Baldy Road and Upper Gwillim Road. One can still see some remnants of this original plan today with parts of Old Mission Creek Preserve being closed off to traffic while portions are open to hiking/bike riding or public use including mission creek itself which has been designated a community park by the city government). Today's downtown business district started life as small cottage businesses selling groceries and hardware near where Elm Street meets Highway 101 south of downtown La Mesa proper. A large shopping mall built on former farmland northeast of downtown opened in 1984 adjacent to Interstate 5 (now I-10), making it easy for drivers coming into town from outlying counties to get their shopping done without driving through Riverside or la mesa proper again!
