The first people to live in what is now La Mirada were Coast Miwok Indians who hunted on the peninsula that now includes LaMirada Beach. In 1851, Captain John Sutter discovered oil wells around present-day La Mirada and determined it would be an ideal spot for a sheep ranch he was starting up in nearby Santa Clarita. In 1892, Mexican immigrants from Baja California began arriving at Point Reyes Station to work on the new Pacific Electric Railway line between L.A./Los Angeles and San Francisco Airport (now El Centro). They brought their food surplus with them to Point Reyes Station, where they set about building a small town called Rancho Mirage on top of the points they’d reached by boat from Mexicali Bay. In 1909, local businessman Humberto Reyes purchased 1/4 mile of beach front property south of Isla Vista for $2 per acre (the price has since increased to $32 per acre). He named it “La Mirada” after his home town of Málaga, Spain – then part of France – where he had been born in 1879. In 1923 real estate developer Harry Weldon bought 1/4 mile of beachfront property north of Isla Vista for $2 per acre (the price has since increased to $32 peracre). He renamed it “Bel Air” after his Bel Air home town near Pasadena, California. By 1932 both land parcels were owned by RKO Radio Pictures which leased them back to Mr. Reyes until 1939 when he sold all his land including La Mirada Beach to Hollywood producer Jesse Lasky Jr..
