The La Mirada Army Museum is a private museum located in La Mirada, California that preserves the history of the United States military in Southern California. The museum was founded in 1975 and is the only military museum in Southern California. The museum has an exhibit collection of over 200,000 items from the American Revolution to World War II. The museums first incarnation as the La Mirada Historical Museum consisted of two buildings on 10th Street between Mission Boulevard and Interstate 5. In 1978, ownership changed hands and the current building was constructed on what used to be Mission Boulevard just north of Harbor Freight Open Market shopping center. The original mission for this place was to serve as a school for children who were then working at local businesses around town. In 1984, the US Military Academy at West Point donated land adjacent to their old barracks on 9th Street for use as an army post exchange site. This allowed USMC cadets from all over Southern California to come and visit their training ground while they awaited their commissioning into service with their respective units. In 1992, it became apparent that there wasn’t going to be enough space left on 10th Street so soon after construction started on what would become known as “the factory” – a large complex consisting of three buildings that now houses both museums together under one roof (the third building will house offices eventually). To make up for lost time, architect Don Burchfield designed a new annex which contains four small exhibition galleries and five underground parking decks (note: these are not currently open due to renovations). As part of its centennial celebration in 2012, LA County Parks dedicated part of its park system fronting Prospect Avenue between 11th and 12th Streets across from LAX airport) with an area measuring 350 acres (1 km²) including wetlands, streams and natural forests providing homes for more than 100 species of birds including osprey, Bald Eagle and toucan; access points totaling 16 miles (30 km) worth of trails; Over 1 million artifacts representing every era since 1848 when Los Angeles County was organized via Mexican land grants; A visitor center complete with exhibits about Native Americans life before European settlement; A reconstructed 1795 Spanish mission called San Gabriel Arcangela – once home to more than 20 missionaries from Mexico City It should be noted that this part is not currently open though portions are open during weekdays during regular park hours.– curatorship by Don Burchfield himself La Mirada History Museum

The La Mirada Battalion of the United States Army was first organized on December 12, 1916. The battalion was originally called the California National Guard and served as part of the World War I Defense of Western America Expedition. The battalion was deactivated on October 31, 1919. On November 15, 1920, the battalion was reactivated at Camp Pendleton in San Diego County as a unit of the California National Guard. The battalion served in various capacities until it became a full-time military unit on October 6, 1942 when it moved to Redondo Beach and changed its name to the La Mirada Battalion, United States Army. The battalion continued to serve as a military unit until it left active duty on September 30, 1947.
La Mirada is a small town in the San Diego County, California area. The population was 12,813 at the 2010 census. It is located on the edge of Qualcomm Peninsula and has a dramatic view of the Pacific Ocean. La Mirada's name comes from Spanish for "the mirage" or "the sheen." La Mirada is also home to Point Loma National Seashore and Santa Ysabel National Park. The city was established by land developers in 1915 as a retirement community for naval officers who had been stationed in nearby San Diego. The original name of the town, which was then known as Rancho Mirage, may have derived from an early Spanish name meaning "place where men can see water". In 1885, Don Isidro Lopez purchased 7,000 acres (25 km2) adjacent to Rancho Mirage and laid out what would become La Mirada on it; he called it Villa Hermosa ("Humble Villa"). After his death in 1893, his wife Hilda took over management of the property until her death in 1916. In 1915, Los Angeles developer Julius Rosenbaum purchased some 640 acres (240 ha) north of La Mirada along present-day Highway 8 that he planned to develop into an exclusive resort town withstands only high-ranking military officers and their families. Rosenbaum renamed his new development Refugio de las Américas after Mexico's1910 revolution that overthrew Spain's colonial government and created an independent Mexican nation. At its peak during World War II Refugio de las Américas attracted more than 20,,000 Americans who used its beaches for training purposes before returning home; today it remains mostly residential with a few restaurants and stores catering to tourists. In 1942, the United States military established Camp Pendleton within the boundaries of La Mirada and began garrisoning troops there. In 1959, La Mirada annexed part of downtown San Diego which had been abandoned since World War II. That year also saw the opening of Disneyland Resort within La Mirada's boundaries. Since then, many new development projects have taken place in and around La Mirada including an ambitious $2 billion redevelopment plan for downtown that is scheduled to wrap up in 2020.
