La Mirada is a small town in San Diego County, California. It is located on the edge of the city of San Diego and is part of the Padres belt. La Mirada sits on a bluff overlooking downtown San Diego and its harbor. The population was 5,589 at the 2010 census. The area now known as La Mirada was first inhabited by Chumash Indians who lived along present-day US-101 from early times to about 1821 when they were pushed out by Mission Dolores seekers. Rancho Viejo, established in 1836 by Mexican Governor Alvarado, became one of the largest ranches in Mexico and included much of what is now La Mirada. The land was again acquired by Mexicans in 1852 when Don Francisco Pico sold it to American Benjamin West for $1 million (U$S: $10 million). In 1861, following Mexican independence from Spain, Los Angeles County was created with portions including La Mirada within it. The U.S.-owned Rancho Viejo land became part of Angeles National Forest while Los Angeles City proper continued to be organized into wards (boroughs). On October 30, 1916 – just days after World War I ended – Mayor James Hahn proposed that East Coast residents move into businesses vacated by Japanese Americans during World War II because there would be no need for them “in this war-torn locality” (Hahn 1916). The proposal met with negative reaction and was shelved until 1949 when Hahn increased taxes to fund needed public works projects (Foster 1959). Developer Adolphus Bechtel bought Rincon Park Reserve east of downtown San Diego in 1928 and began developing it into what is now La Mirada; he named his development Santa Ysabel AFTER Deity enshrined at El Camino Real shrine near downtown LA (& henceforth), & also began marketing himself as “the developer who built dreams come true” (& other similar titles) (& various other honors)….. In 1930 he contributed an initial parcel of land totaling .75 acres adjacent to the park reserve east of Main Street which he designated as "La Quinta". He soon subdivided this area into parcels even larger than those above & started calling it "Westchester"………….. By 1941 Bechtel had developed over 2 square miles (.8 square kilometers) within EAST SAN DIEGO…In 1945 he donated 202 acres SW OF HIGHWAY 101 TO THE CITY OF SAN DIEGO FOR USE AS A NATURAL GARDEN……After WWII many people wanted Stately Homes replaced with Low Income Housing but only after passage Of FAIR housing bill did these plans become a reality Today most families who live here grow their own food or buy groceries from local stores…. According To 2002 Census survey less than 1%of households have electricity either generated or purchased…. Most people here rely on carspooling/bike commuting etc In 1912 there were 9 white males living here total In 1940 there were 281 black males living here total

La Mirada was first established in 1907 as an agricultural community on the eastern edge of OrANGE COUNTY. In 1925, La Mirada became an incorporated town and its name reverted to its original post-1907 name: "Mirada". In 1927, La Mirada annexed part of Donner Lake and in 1933 it annexed parts of Buena Park and Seal Beach. In 1959, La Mirada voters passed a resolution declaring themselves a city. On February 14th of that year, Los Angeles Mayor Otis Pike announced that City Councilwoman Valerie Watkins would be the first African American to serve on the LA City Council. The vote by Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to annex portions of La Miradora into Los Angeles marked the beginning of what would be an long process for Latinos to gain access to city services and land within LA boundaries. That same year saw construction begin on what is now known as City Hall Drive which connected downtown with east side streets such as Central Avenue and Anaheim Boulevard.
