The city of La Mirada, California is located in the Mojave Desert and was founded on November 15, 1912 by pioneers who were looking for a new place to live after leaving the Salt Lake City Latter-day Saints (LDS) church. The city was named after theMirada Mountains which are located in central California. The first settlers of La Mirada were Spanish Americans who arrived from Baja California in 1849. They built homes and businesses on what is now First Street between Center and State Streets. In 1915, La Mirada became an incorporated town with a population of about 100 people. In 1925, theLos Angeles County bought 1/3 of La Mirada from the original Spanish American settlers for $5,000. Los Angeles then dedicated all of its resources to developing La Mirada as a planned community with streets and boulevards that would lead to factories or other businesses. By 1930, there were over 200 people living in La Mirada. In 1936, the United States military established Camp Carson at nearby Spring Valley for troops stationed during World War II. In 1945, when Japan surrendered following World War II, most Japanese citizens left Los Angeles County for fear of being drafted into service in Japan under the terms of surrender agreements that did not apply toAmericans. A few Japanese residents remained until 1949 when they were evicted by order of General Stilwell because he felt they had helped support Japanese resistance during World War II while living within US borders unobserved
The La Mirada area was first settled by the Tongva people in the late 18th century. In 1834, a rancho was granted to José Antonio Mora, who named it Rancho Los Alamitos. It is said that during the Mexican-American War, General marcelino García Bernal and his troops were camped at Los Alamitos when they came across a group of Native Americans led by chief Manuel Dominguez. The battle resulted in a skirmish that ended with no fatalities on either side. The Moras soon acquired title to the land from their predecessors. In 1848, Don Isidro de la Hoz founded the city of La Mirada on what is now the east side of State Route 92 near where he built his mansion on Point Mugu. He leased part of his holdings to Captain John Waddell for $2 per acre, which became known as Rancho Las Palmas de la Hoz (later renamed City of La Mirada). On July 15, 1853, Governor James Kenedy authorized Surf County to be organized and named it after him because its shoreline extended into San Diego Bay Surrounding Lands Grant No. 1; this county later included much of what is now Orange County and Riverside County. In 1861, Mayor Lorenzo Ruiz issued an ordinance creating a Board of Supervisors with five members: three men and two women elected at large and one member appointed by the mayor with specific powers including “the regulation and management” of public works within Surf County limits
