La Mirada is a small city in southern California. It is located on the central coast of Los Angeles County and lies within the San Gabriel Valley. La Mirada's population was 23,461 as of 2010, making it the second most populous city in Los Angeles County after Carson City. The city had a total area of 3 square miles (8 km²). The first European to visit La Mirada was Gaspar de Portolà in 1769. Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo visited the local mission on September 26, 1774 and named it La Mission de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción del Monte (The Mission of Our Lady of Conception at La Mirada). The town began to be called "Nuestra Señora" because it was then part of Rancho San Vicente de la Cañada (later known as Rancho Santa Anita) which belonged to José Joaquín Mora y Ruiz. In 1821, alcalde Pedro Feliciano granted land east of the railroad tracks to Antonio Canales for a new town site and named it "La Mirada". In 1857, Mexican immigrants established a small farm near what is now downtown La Mirada. American settlers arrived in 1861 when they bought land between Point Mugu and Harbor Boulevard from José María Cámpora and founded what became known as Pasadena. A year later, Jameson Vineyards opened its doors in nearby Point Concho Heights and soon started producing wine that would become popular all over Southern California. The attention from wine producers led to an influx of people into LaMiradans who began building homes around Point Mugu Lake beginning in 1893. By 1907 over 60% of residents were Spanish-speaking Americans while 30% were German-speaking Californians or Mexicans who had crossed the border illegally. After World War I ended hostilities between America and Mexico ended; however many Border Patrol agents continued working until 1920 during Prohibition when alcohol was banned across mostof America due to state prohibition laws.. In 1923 Mayor Manuel Sánchez set up a zoning board with five members to develop plans for growth within limits prescribed by law while also observing community concerns about water shortages, traffic congestion, crime and social decay caused by alcoholism among Latinos living behind barbed wire fences along the US/Mexico border.(Sanchez Plan) In 1933 two years after passage of Proposition 8 which repealed zoneing regulations enacted during Sanchez Plan days driving out low-income Latinos only servedto exacerbate housing problems created by previous zoning restrictions including those against owner occupied housing which prevented Latino families from buying homes closer than 100 feet away from schools or other public services even though these boundaries were changed more times than zip code numbers!(Diaz v Diaz) Los Angeles County voters passed proposition 1 on November 3rd 1942 establishing countywide zoned storage areas providing preferential treatment for agricultural production not currently affecting adjacent residential areas thus legalizing subdivisions west off Beatty Avenue run down slums east off Western Avenue which developed directly west off I-5 following annexation treaty between LA & Ventura counties

La Mirada is a town in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 21,060 as of the 2010 census. It is located on the Pacific coast of San Diego County and is part of the San Diego-Carlsbad metropolitan area. The name "La Mirada" means "The View." The first permanent inhabitants were two brothers who came overland from Mexico in 1836. They named their new community after their view looking out to Atlantic Bay on the SanDiego Peninsula: La Mesa del Carmelo (The Mesa of Carmelo). In 1847, they founded what would become La Jolla Cove Company with investors led by Commodore John D. Sloat and Captain James Fenton. By 1850, there were 9 businesses in la mirada with a population of 236 people including banking, shipbuilding, and fishing operations along with cattle and sheepraising; many Adobe Walls had been built to protect these activities from vandalism or competition from outside interests.). During World War II, La Mirada served as an air raid warning center for Southern California communities such as Garden Grove and Fullerton because it was close to military bases at Lackland Air Force Base and North Island Naval Air Station. In 1957–1958 during the height of Disneyland's success – before it opened its gates to public – La Mirada residents helped provide dining services for more than 350 guests at Anaheim Stadium which then hosted concerts by Elvis Presley and other top entertainers while also serving as a location for advertising campaigns for Disneyland . In 1970 when Disneyland merged with Walt Disney World Resort, parts of La Mirada became part of that new park while other portions remained within la mirada itself until its annexation into Walt Disney World Resort in 2003. Today most locals refer to themselves simply as "Californians".
