La Mirada is a city located in the San Gabriel Valley region of Los Angeles County, California. As of the 2010 census, its population was 86,569. The city is adjacent to the unincorporated community of La Habra and the county seat of Los Angeles. It is southwest of downtown Los Angeles and lies on both sides of Harbor Boulevard between US-101 and I-405. The first European settlers in La Mirada were Spanish soldiers who established a military post there in 1821 as part of General José Joaquín de la Vega's effort to secure land grants for Mexican citizens who had fought against Mexico during the American War of Independence. The Spanish name for the area now known as La Mirada was Rancho Verdugo. In 1847, miradas (a type of eye) were planted near what are now Harbor Boulevard and Wilshire Boulevard by Nicholas Dooley, an early settler in La Mirada. Dooley named his new town after his friend Manuel Alvarez de Leguizamiento y Gasset, 2nd Viscount Guadalupe de la Cruz y Teruel, one of history's most powerful men during early 19th century California ranching operations. After Leguizamiento died in 1859 without leaving any children behind him, his widow decided to name her son after her late husband rather than abandon him without heirs apparent. She also changed nicknames – from "Mariachi" (singer/dancer) to "La Bamba" (the baby). In 1872–73 Máximo Pico developed a salt mine at Helveticos Hill within sight of La Mirada City limits; this led to increased demand for water supplies and later development around Helveticos Hill including Pico's Sun Oil Company factory complex which became one of America's largest oil refineries after World War II. The city annexed parts or all of neighboring communities such as Encino (now Lynwood), Carson Burbank Industrial Park (later Westchester Park), Rolling Hills Estates, North Hollywood and South Hollywood beginning with its incorporation on April 14, 1911 pursuant to state Act 694 under then Mayor Antonio Moreno Auriol: it included present-day neighborhoods east side Of Sunset Strip north side Of Beverly Glen west side Of Fairfax Avenue south side Of Glendale Boulevard east side Of Cahuenga Boulevard west side Of Lankershim Boulevard .

The town of La Mirada, California was founded in 1881 by John Hammond. The community was named for the Mirada Mountains in nearby San Diego County. Hammond developed a successful citrus industry in La Mirada and became one of the first farmers to cultivate citrus trees on a large scale in California. He also built a small factory to produce textiles. In 1907, Hammond sold his business and moved to Riverside, California, where he died in 1928. La Mirada is located on the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) about 10 miles southeast of downtown San Diego and 15 miles southeast of Riverside. The town has a population of about 40,000 people who are mostly retirees or students from nearby universities. The local economy relies heavily on agriculture and tourism.
