In the early 1800s, La Mirada was a small fishing village on the southern coast of California. The first successful mission to be built in the area was Santa Catalina in 1821, and soon after there were military deployments to support that original mission. The first military deployment in La Mirada took place on October 25, 1861 when US soldiers arrived to help with the Mexican-American War. From 1861 until 1865, La Mirada was also home to an American Naval Station which supported Naval operations throughout Southern California. After the end of the American Civil War and Reconstruction in America, La Mirada became a free community once again and began growing exponentially as a result. In 1923, it became one of five communities within Los Angeles County that were consolidated into one unified county government under Governor Ralph Yarborough.

The small town was founded in 1919 by Normandie Himmelbach and her husband Willis Himmelbach. The name comes from Mirando Peak, a mountain in nearby Huntington Beach which can be seen from most of La Mirada. In 1924 Normandie married Roy Ziegler and they bought land on State Route 179 east of downtown La Mirada for $10 per acre (1/4 mile). The couple developed the area into what it is today with their home as its first building and later adding other homes until they had a total of 10 buildings including 5 stores, 2 banks, 2 churches, 1 post office, 1 hotel and 3 schools. Mr. Ziegler also served as mayor pro tem from 1951-1954 and 1955-1958; he then became an congressman representing Orange County from 1959-1967 before retiring at 75 years old due to poor health. In 1957 Normandie gave birth to their only child Barbara Ziegler who would go on to become president of Warner Brothers Entertainment Inc., one of Hollywood's most prominent families for over 50 years! In addition to her mother’s influence upon La Mirada through her store ownership skillset combined with Mrs. Ziegler’s leadership abilities within her community service efforts both during college days as well when she chaired many school board meetings throughout her entire 7 year tenure there (from 1978-1982), Barbara has also exerted great influence both domestically & internationally within the entertainment industry thru work done outside OFWMI both prioritizing family values & developing relationships w/ numerous major clients worldwide (&many more since taking office) – all without ever sacrificing professional obligations or personal commitments set forth herein!

The population was 113,623 as of 2010 and it is the second most populous city in San Diego County after Tijuana. The history of La Mirada can be traced back to 1881 when Rancho Mirage was purchased by José Márquez from Manuel Nieto. In 1912 La Mirada became an incorporated city under the name of "Oceanside". In 1946 it changed its name to "La Mirada" after Mayor Fernando Guerra's donation of land for the purpose. The first post office in La Mirada was established on November 15, 1881 (later renamed Saugus) with Amedeo Boccioni as mail carrier. On December 5, 1886, Postmaster General Levi Strauss donated a building lot at 1050 North Water Street for use as a post office by Oceanside residents only. By 1901 there were six post offices in Oceanside: three in downtownSanDiego and three around Willow Beach: Lighthouse Point (1891), Belle Haven (1912) and Pebble Beach (1921). On May 1, 1911 Los Angeles Incorporation organized with incorporation papers dated May 3 being filed at 9296-A West Valley Boulevard which served as the first headquarters for Los Angeles County until county headquarters moved to Hollywood Hills in 1942. On October 10th 1905 Don Waddell opened the first store in what would become known as La Mesa Boulevard which later became known as El Centro Boulevard/Highway 66 where he sold goods such as shoes and clothing from his establishment until 1923 when he retired due to health problems caused by lead poisoning that led to death a few years earlier aged 44 years old . Another early business owner who operated out of what is now called Main Street was Hoyle & Sons Cigar Emporium which opened its doors on July 8th 1906 selling cigars direct from their factory across from today’s Joe’s Pizza Place . After World War I Prohibition ended two days later on October 17th . This marked one of only two times during prohibition throughout America that cigarettes could be bought openly without having to go through a Liquor Control Board outlet; however this also resulted in increased law enforcement patrols targeting speakeasy owners because bartenders were able to sell cigarettes without government permits allowing them
The first Europeans to visit the area were Juan Rodríguez Cabezón and Francisco de Paula Zurita on October 20, 1542. The Spanish missions in California were founded by the Franciscans in 1769. La Mirada was founded in 1881 as a small town on the banks of the San Gabriel River. It became an independent city on July 7, 1907.
